  • Wild camping site with views over Scarborough's coast
  • A 20-minute drive to Filey; 45 minutes to North York Moors
  • Peaceful pitches with amenities close by; half an hour walk to beach
Fancy dipping into seaside days in Scarborough rather than settling down in the thick of the action? Sandy Bed Lane Campsite could be just the place – this quiet North Yorkshire site is on a secluded crescent two miles from Scarborough’s town centre and beach, with great views over the southern side of the resort. That edge-of-town location means that you can pitch up at a place that was picked for its mix of peaceful leafy surrounds and nearby amenities – and you can choose to head down to the bustling centre or stay closer to home as you wish. (Or, given that it’s only a short drive to the main road, you could set off for the likes of Filey, Whitby and Flamborough Head or get out for day trips to York or walks in the North York Moors National Park…) Pretty much everything you could require is within walking distance here – footpaths nearby mean that supermarkets, pubs and takeaways are all close by, and you can get down to the beach with a walk of about half an hour. In keeping with its relaxed wild camping style, it’s a simple setup at this family- and dog-friendly site, with just portable toilets on the facilities front (please note, no showers or running water).

Local attractions

Scarborough’s packed with things to keep you busy for many a day – start at the beach (of course), taking your pick from the lively South Bay (with amusements, donkey rides and fine sand for sandcastles) or the quieter North Bay. After that, perhaps a ride on the miniature railway, a bit of boating in Peasholm Park, a visit to the castle, checking out the engines at the Scarborough Fair Collection, eyeballing marine creatures at the Sea Life Centre… Elsewhere along the coast, you might like to take days in Filey (20 minutes’ drive), Whitby (35 minutes) or Bridlington, or get your binoculars out for birdwatching at RSPB Bempton Cliffs (35 minutes). A walk around the coast at Flamborough Head (40 minutes) is a good way to get your fill of fresh air too. Heading inland, it’ll take you about 45 minutes to get to the trails of the North York Moors National Park or an hour or so to the city streets of York. The North Yorkshire Water Park (15 minutes), Playdale Farm Park (20 minutes), Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum (35 minutes) and Flamingo Land theme park (35 minutes) might also be on the cards for family days.
