General

  • Peaceful riverbank site on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Scarborough and beaches, 20 minutes from Filey
  • Great spot for anglers, with licence-free fishing on site

Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough.

Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some licence-free fishing.

Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways.

Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast.

Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A charge of £1.00 ($1.75) applies for the use of the shower.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Brilliant little site by the riverside, in the Beautiful yorkshire countryside, Our hosts Denise & Dave were great and couldn't do enough for us, very helpful when we had a problem with the electrics in the van, and they have done everything they can to comply with covid regulations also watching the rescued battery hens enjoying their new free range life was an added bonus. There are regular buses into scarborough from the village and from there you can go on to whitby, bridlington york etc, so leave the car on the site and enjoy your stay, we enjoyed ours so much we will defo be returning next year.

Yes the toilets and shower are a little rundown but They are Kept clean and are certainly Safe to use. Also these are being upgraded during closed season

    Nothing.

    Disliked:

The site was not very welcoming after our previous site even though it was more expensive. The toilet/shower facilities were less than the standard expected. Although called Riverside, the area by the river was very overgrown and no access to the river. Several old caravans on site together with an old boat which were a bit of an eyesore, not a site that we would revisit. We were surprised that it appeared to be Caravan Club approved.

From the manager...

I'm sorry you didnt find us welcoming, we have had no problems with this in all the years we have been open, we thought you where not very friendly! But let's not dwell on that, the river is grown up as we do not want to encourage children to climb down the banks as it is the river derwent and there is an under current, but actually there are a coup,e of places that is safe, not so deep if you had of asked instead of mooching around finding fault I would have told you. Those old caravans belong to people, who store them with us, we can't all afford new ones!!!

Not very busy - quiet spacious pitches

    Disliked:

    - Toilet and shower facilities dirty
    - Toilet flush poor
    - No hot water to wash your dishes
    - Male owner shouts and swears in earshot of kids
    - Early morning awaken 4am by farm animals

From the manager...

Am not going to comment on toilets, we try to keep as clean as possible but peop.e have different levels of clean and not everybody leaves them in a suitable state. You had a caravan can you not wash up in that, everyone with tents just boils kettle! And I think you where aware we had animals on booking, they do wake up early. I'm not going to comment on my husband but we all get frustrated sometimes.

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching.

Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail.

A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend.

If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.

Must see

  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (13.9 kilometers)
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (19.4 kilometers)
  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (21.9 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (12.3 kilometers)
  • Yorkshire Coast (17.3 kilometers)
