General

  • Peaceful country park with a friendly atmosphere and green views
  • A 20-min stroll to Rattlesden; cycle and walking routes from the site
  • Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds and Long Melford within a 25-minute drive

For first-rate wanders around the fens, ponder a stay at Barn Owl Campsite in East Anglia – then take a look at the pics, pack those walking boots and get going. This site in Suffolk has strolling and cycle routes nearby and is a 20-minute drive from town tramping in the medieval settlements of Lavenham and Bury St Edmunds.

Guests might want to linger in the former for old architecture dating back to the time when it was one of the 20 wealthiest places in England, from the Guildhall and Little Hall to the Gothic St Peter and St Paul's Church and a host of half-timbered cottages. Browsing shops and art your thing? Lavenham has 30 independent stores and galleries too. Diehard Harry Potter fans can often be seen swooning over the house where scenes of the boy wizard’s younger days were filmed as well.

Bury St Edmunds also has architecture aplenty, including the ruins of an abbey with formal gardens and an aviary in its surrounds. For more landscapes of the manicured sort, stop by the Italian-style palace of Ickworth House, 25 minutes from the site and slightly west of Bury – but make sure to have a gander at the town’s huge ninth-century cathedral before you do.

Other popular Suffolk villages are Long Melford for antique shops and the Tudor mansion of Kentwell Hall (25 minutes’ drive), as well as summertime open-air plays and concerts; Hadleigh, meanwhile, is the place for River Brett roams around the same distance away.

But if you’re not up for travelling far? The park’s a 20-minute stroll from the village of Rattlesden, which has a small shop, a post office and a couple of country pubs.

This is a fantastic 'back to basics' site laid out …09/17/2020

This is a fantastic 'back to basics' site laid out to offer privacy, tranquility and the sense of being 'in' nature. The closest you'll come to wild camping whilst still having access to a loo, shower, washing up point, rubbish, recycling and chemical loo disposal point. These are located at the top of the main field and are, well, basic, not what you'd expect to find on a commercial site catering for hundreds of regimented 'campers'. If you are looking for on site entertainment in the way of bars, shops, bingo halls, football pitches, immaculate toilet and shower blocks, etc. this is not the site for you. If you are looking for on site entertainment by way of exploring the wooded fringes of the site, slinging a hammock for some chill time, watching buzzards circling (and gliders from the nearby club) owls quartering the meadow and hooting in the surrounding trees, roe deer barking, star gazing in an increasingly rare dark environment or sitting round an actively encouraged camp fire contemplating the universe over a beer or three it certainly is.

Space between the pitches in the meadow is amazing, a minimum of 100 ft, and the layout is such that you can only really see one other from wherever you are. I think there were only 5 or six in total. With young kids there are a couple of pitches that offer proximity to the loo and a fully fenced main field for them to run around in, but I suspect most will head through the top gate to the 'wilderness' meadow.

The owners, Laura and Jason, were friendly, welcoming and helpful without being at all intrusive.

I remember being forced to read Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd as a kid. I don't remember the story at all, but I'm going to pinch his title for the summary of this review! Very highly recommend!

Wonderful large private pitch with great tarpaulin cover for shelter and a hammock to chill on. Laura was extremely helpful with her recommendations for places to visit locally. We just loved the privacy and sitting by the fire listening to the owl at night was heaven for us. Our hound loved it too as nice walk to the pub across the fields. Back to basics site which was exactly we wanted so can’t wait to return!

Great campsite, with all the facilities required. Meadow pitches are secluded and private, lovely. Have done the grass pitches before and they are also very good. Helped us out with matches and firestarter as it was a bit colder than expected, a nice touch!

Great campsite with the choice of grass field pitches or the meadow (we chose the meadow). Ample space for the number of bookings. Pitches in the meadow are very secluded and private. Owners regularly cleaned the shared facilities. They were very friendly and welcoming. Toilet and shower facilities fairly basic but absolutely fine for camping needs. Great value overall and would return.
