  • Family- and dog-friendly rural meadow two miles from Potton
  • 35-minute drive to Cambridge; 20 minutes to Shuttleworth Collection
  • Electricity and CCTV; covered barn, firepits and hammocks available
If you’re looking for a family-run place that understands just what makes a holiday under canvas go without a hitch, there’s a good chance Mill Farm could tick lots of your boxes. At the edge of the village of Gamlingay, about 15 minutes from the A1, this four-acre level meadow site in rural Cambridgeshire has wide-open views of the surrounding countryside. Despite such countrified surrounds, it's only about 35 minutes’ drive from here to central Cambridge – head out for a day of punting, sightseeing or soaking up the atmosphere of the historic university town and you can be back to your pitch in time to enjoy the sunset. You won’t need to go very far to stock up on local produce and treats to tuck into round the campfire. 200 metres from site is a farm shop with an on-site cafe, butcher and deli where you can pick up fresh fruit, veg, bread, eggs, milk, barbecue packs and booze. If cooking for yourself isn’t on the menu, two miles away in the market town of Potton a handful of takeaways, pubs and other shops can sort you out. Dogs are welcome on site and there are plenty of places around to take them for a walk. The Clopton Way runs right past site and Potton Woods is about a mile away via footpaths. Mill Farm has electricity supply, fresh water and CCTV throughout, plus hot showers, toilets, a kitchen prep area and a communal fridge. Firepits, hammocks and barbecues are available to use during your stay, and there’s also a cosy covered barn with seating.

Local attractions

The historic university city of Cambridge (35 minutes’ drive) is well worth a visit, not least for a day of messing about on the river. But it’s not the only place nearby to get out on the water: search for boat hire on the River Great Ouse and a few options should come up near St Neots (20 minutes) and Huntingdon (25 minutes). For more time out and about on the water there's also Wyboston Lakes (15 minutes) which has an aqua park, canoeing and paddleboarding (it's also got golf and spa facilities if you’d rather stay on dry land…) For a day trip with a bit of something for everyone, try Shuttleworth (20 minutes). Saunter around the pretty Swiss Garden, visit six hangars full of aviation and automotive history at the Shuttleworth Collection and let the young ones go wild for a while at the playground.
