General
- Well-stocked fishing lake covering five acres
- In Cambridgeshire countryside bordered by the River Nene
- Bordering the villages of Yarwell and Nassington
Now this is fishing on a grand scale…There’ll be no angling for a good spot at Yarwell Mill Country Park, bordered by the serene River Nene: the well-stocked fishing lake here covers five acres, so you're sure to find a solitary spot in which to settle down.
Or just sit dreamily over a book if that's your bag instead: the park is set in calm Cambridgeshire countryside and will have those looking for a relaxing holiday hooked line and sinker.
Facilities here are hassle-free: clean showers and toilets are well lit at night, and there's also a washing-up area. The village of Yarwell is on the edge of the park for real ale and pub grub at the Angel Inn; if you need to stock up on any fishy essentials, the fishing tackle shop Sheltons is in Peterborough, 20 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions
Bring your boots: the countryside surrounding Yarwell Mill and Yarwell village is packed with scenic walks and quiet villages to explore, including Wansford and Nassington, and the historic town of Stamford is six miles away with its timber-framed buildings, medieval churches and 17th- and 18th-century stone buildings to point the camera at.
The 117-mile Nene Way passes through Peterborough and also takes in the ancient market town of Oundle, 12 miles to the south west; the Sulehay Nature Reserve, covering walks around the ancient forest of Sulehay, the Stonepit Quarry and the woods and fields of Ring Haw is just to the west of Yarwell (there’s some parking at the entrance to the forest on the Wansford to Yarwell road).
For resting your feet, jump onto the Nene Valley Steam Railway, which has been puffing along since 1845 and which runs for seven and a half miles along the river; join it at Wansford for the girder bridge trip across the Nene or go loco and book a Driver Experience.
Then track along to the historic village of Fotheringhay, said by a historian to have ‘been distinguished beyond any other place in Britain, except the Capital, by the aggravated misfortunes of Royalty’; Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabethan Elizabeth are just two blue-blooded types associated with the village, although Liz was slightly luckier in that she wasn’t executed at Fotheringhay Castle.
Potter in and around Peterborough too for heaps of historical highlights such as 17th-century Elton Hall, the medieval manor house Longthorpe Hall and the Grade I listed Thorpe Hall. Or, you could decide to be thoroughly contrary and modern and book a skydive at Peterborough’s Sibson Airfield.
