General
- Adults-only rural site next to a golf course in Pidley village
- Half an hour's drive from Ely and 45 minutes from Cambridge
- Restaurant, tennis court and three-acre fishing lake on site
Seeking a place that’s entirely free of tiddlers running around underfoot? Settle in at Stroud Hill Park and you’ll find it’s a most grownup affair at this adults-only Cambridgeshire countryside site, in the village of Pidley and 20 minutes’ drive from Huntingdon.
Without any kids to cater for, all the effort has gone into honing the site’s facilities for a more mature palate. At the heart of the place is a timber-framed building that’s home to a shop, an excellent restaurant (with a well-stocked bar, naturally…) and top-notch bathrooms with toilets and showers – all of it set up to be accessible to disabled guests and those a little less steady on their feet.
Likewise, activity options are all aimed at more adult tastes – there’s a tennis court on site, along with a huge three-acre coarse fishing lake packed with bream, roach and chunky carp (up to 25 pounds), and a golf centre next door with an 18-hole course (plus ten pin bowling in case rain stops play). A couple of circular walking routes run from just outside the park, although you may prefer to amble along the 25-minute route to the local village pub…
Days out? This is a good area to get max value out of your National Trust membership, pootle around gardens and little villages or take off to explore the market in St Ives, the cathedral city of Ely or the colleges of Cambridge.

Local attractions
This is an excellent area for folk who fancy a bit of gentle walking or bike riding on hols – it’s mercifully light on hills and there are plenty of quiet lanes, footpaths and bridleways to make your way along as you traipse between villages, parks and nature reserves.
There’s much strolling to be done at nearby National Trust estates too: check out the 18th-century workings of Houghton Mill (20 minutes), wander through the elegant walled gardens of Wimpole Hall (35 minutes’ drive), peruse Peckover House’s fine gardens (45 minutes) and take an arty amble around Anglesey Abbey (45 minutes).
St Ives (15 minutes) is worth a slice of your time, especially if you make it over there on market day (Monday or Friday) and leave time for a riverside walk to see the swans. For a bit more river-based activity, head to Cambridge (45 minutes) to see the sights while attempting to navigate a punt along the River Cam.
