  • Peaceful family-friendly site 20 minutes' walk from Ramsey town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from the Nene Valley Railway; 40 minutes from Ely
  • Playground, space for games and river frontage for seasonal fishing
Hankering after a country getaway but fearful of being stranded far from life’s useful amenities? Fret not, for it’s possible that Rivermill Touring Caravan and Camping Park’s nifty location may have the compromise you’re after. Yes, this is a place where you can settle to enjoy a peaceful break in the Fens, fishing in the river that passes by the site, trotting out on to the footpaths that cross the local area or just putting your feet up with a beer in one hand and binoculars in the other to see what wildlife you can spot (muntjac deer, red kites, kestrels and kingfishers are among the creatures that sometimes call by). And then when you need to head out, you can do so most easily – no need even to get in the car if you wish, as it’s a mere 20-minute toddle into Ramsey’s historic town centre for pubs, restaurants, banks and the like, with a sizeable supermarket even closer for foodie supplies. Should the rural pace of life leave you unwilling even to trot that far, local takeaways are happy to deliver up here. If you’ve brought nippers who don’t believe in relaxing times, you’ll be chuffed to see there’s a playground on site, along with plenty of space for them to hare about and tire themselves out. Rivermill is an unoccupied site, but it has a security gate.

Local attractions

You need not roam far to hit the local leisure facilities – Ramsey has not one but two golf courses, and a sports centre with a sizeable pool and a lengthy list of kids’ activities throughout the summer hols. Looking a little further afield, a good day out can be had at the Raptor Foundation, 20 minutes away, meeting the birds of prey in their rehab centre and watching flying displays. There are also wild beasts galore (including kangaroos and big cats) over at Hamerton Zoo Park, half an hour away. Train buffs will likely want to roll along to the Nene Valley Railway, half an hour away, where vintage steam and diesel trains run to Yarwell or Peterborough. Come along at the right time and you might even see Thomas the Tank Engine putting in a guest appearance. Closer to home, the Fenland Light Railway, 10 minutes away, runs miniature trains that are perennially popular with the tinies. If you're more into your historic buildings, it's worth making the 40-minute drive to Ely for its cathedral, stained glass museum and Oliver Cromwell's House.

Liked: Was disappointed with the site and the facilities. After getting directions we had to travel down a pot hole muddy lane then we had to negotiate a padlock with numbers that were wrong and pull across a very heavy gate. The orchard was OK and the hardstanding OK the electric worked but the showers and toilets not very good. After the first night we left I am disabled ♿ and it was too much for me

Disliked: Showers toilets muddy pothole Lane no reception no bins.

Liked: A little tired generally but grass was tidy and hook up worked ,only 4 vans on site so the 3 toilets and 2 showers would have been adequate if they’d been tidied up, shame really but on the plus side short walk to the village ,one point, trust the satnav to get you about 400metres away but proceed further down a very potholed lane alongside the river to site.

Disliked: nowhere to empty waste and bumpy access road but fair value for money

Liked: Very well kept, full facilities available.

Disliked: So, while there are full facilities, you need your own loo roll. Also, the drinking water tap has a black industrial hose attached and because it's near the chemical disposal I would be wary of using it because I've seen this previously on other sites where people use it for rinsing their toilet cassette! On chemical disposal, I could not find anything to lift the metal lid. Site itself is lovely, clean and well kept. It's the access that's offputting, the dirt lane is passable but there's a 200m section that has more potholes than a war zone. I'm assuming it's an unadopted road.

Liked: Flat pitches, lovely and quiet

Disliked: No reception relies on having good phone signal to check in, toilet sdated with no hot water and some cold taps not working. Showers cold no hot water, no hot water to washing up area and area small. Hazardous area with big hole full of rubbish on river walk. No river water warning signage. Site littered in places. Apart from grass cutting no evidence of ongoing maintenance. Shepherd's huts in need of refresh inside and out
