General

  • Peaceful five-acre rural site with pond and wildflower meadows
  • Two miles from Ely: walk there along the banks of the River Ouse
  • Mad Hatter theme for kids, including playhouse and discovery trail

You don’t have to be mad to stay here… but it’s probably best to leave your serious face at home, for there’s a healthy dose of light-heartedness built in at Mad Hatters Campsite, in the Cambridgeshire countryside two miles from Ely.

Anyone with a passing knowledge of literature will already have twigged that there’s an Alice in Wonderland thing going on here. It’s mainly aimed at the small sorts, of course – in the playhouse, the curious trail and the twisty paths through the grasses – but grownups are highly encouraged to embrace it all too. Wildlife spotters of any age should have a field day here too: a wild pond and various birdboxes and feeding stations scattered around encourage visits from all sorts of native creatures.

At the distinctly sensible end of things are the amenities: family-friendly touches extend to the bathroom block, where two large family showers (with clothes hooks and benches) have been installed, and heated towel rails keep the place warm. A covered washing-up area is nearby, and there’s a tap with an old sink for hosing down any mucky kids or dogs you may have in your possession. A coffee room has also been set up for those who need a caffeine kick and a quiet moment.

As fab as it is to have heaps of space to roam about, stoke up campfires and play games, you may not be so delighted when it comes to lugging all your kit; with that in mind the friendly folk here have provided wheelbarrows to make moving day much easier.

I loved my stay at mad hatters. It was brilliant for the children, who ran around playing like loonies play tag and other games. The location is amazing and we loved going on trips to Ely. The view is amazing and so is the wildlife. We have all loved seeing the swallows and goldfinches. If you are planning to go camping here than prepare to be greeted by a flock of goldfinches erupting from the wild flowers. This camp is very child-friendly and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Site is pretty, the wild flowers around the pitch is perfect and gives you some privacy.

    Disliked:

There was an invasion of wasps! Literally every couple of minute swatting them away which was very annoying. I understand that we were in the countryside but there seems to be something on the site that attracts so many.

This is the most fantastic camp site around - thank you to Claire and husband for providing a peaceful, immaculate place. We booked the Luna glamping tent and it was amazing, we had our own kitchen area and nothing was too much trouble. We loved the fact that you leave your car in the car park so no on site traffic, no noisy banging of car doors at night etc.
Lovely wild meadows, very generous plots - facilities spotlessly clean
Thank you for the fresh eggs, milk tea, coffee and everything. We will return.

wild flower meadows attracting birds and bees. Toilet and shower facilities modern, clean and nice

    Disliked:

the ptiches were just too close together and whilst they were in their own little glades the actual pitches were too small for our liking. You get a 'patio' area outside your tent but NO large grassy fields to for kids to run/ play cricket/ ball / fly a kite.
We were at the front of the field - ie looking out over the wild flowers but it meant that the toilet block was really rather far to walk along windy paths.

There were a few very noisy large groups (definitely more than 2 families! - not social distancing) that made a lot of noise past 11pm on Friday night. Not what expect on a family campsite. One group were playing dance music - which is ok in a bar but not great in a field. We phoned the campsite at 11pm and they did come down to ask them to keep it down but it did spoil the quiet campsite vibe for many others (not in the big groups).
Thankfully Saturday evening was a lot quieter.

Sunday morning ALL the water in the shower blocks went off for several hours. The campsite did get the plmber down quickly and the lack of water was due to someone leaving the tap on all night which had drained the system. But it meant that i packed up and left the campsite rather dirtier than planned.

My husband HATED not having the car next to the pitch. Made set and and striking rather a lot more hard work.

From the manager...

Thank you for the feedback - for future reference for other guests - we do have an open grass area of 2ac which is on the map which was emailed twice to this guest - this area is also marked on the map in the car park. Children regularly fly kites in the area.

We are a nature and children friendly site - in the description of the campsite the layout is explained.

In the wash facilities - we were off water for 40 minutes, then on for 15 minutes and back off for another 30 minutes - our plumber did come out as soon as he was able.

The cleanliness of the wash facilities - we work tirelessly to maintain the cleanliness of the wash facilities - many guests have commented on how spotlessly clean we keep the facilities.

The pitches have at least 2m ranging to 5m of wildflowers between pitches.

Local attractions

See a spire from the site and it’s likely to be that of Ely Cathedral, two miles away: for a closer look, drive there in five minutes or (even better) walk in on the scenic path that runs along the banks of the River Ouse. Once you’ve viewed the cathedral, you can also drop in on Oliver Cromwell’s House, poke around in the antiques market and take a boat trip.

For more aquatic activities, make your way to WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) Welney nature reserve (20 minutes’ drive) to spot wetland wildlife; bounce across the crazy floating obstacles at Cambridge Aqua Park (25 minutes), or head into the centre of Cambridge (40 minutes) to propel a punt past (and hopefully not into) the colleges.

Once you’ve spotted wildlife around the site, set your sights on something rather larger with a trip to Linton Zoo (50 minutes) or a day out with the nags at Newmarket Racecourse and racing museum (40 minutes). Meanwhile, the Milton Maize Maze (half an hour) is a good bet for a bit of farmyard silliness; along with the maze, there’s also duck racing, trampolining and frisbee golf.

Must see

  • Ely Cathedral (4.3 kilometers)
