  • Luxury safari tent glamping with hot tubs in a three-acre meadow
  • On the edge of the Malvern Hills, 25 minutes' drive from Ross-on-Wye
  • Spa treatments, shop, hampers, play area, bike hire, fire pit, garden
Inspired by the swallows that return to these fields each summer, Swallowfields Retreat is designed as a place of rest and relaxation. Every little detail has been thought about to encourage guests to come back again and again to this wildflower meadow on the edge of the Malvern Hills in south Worcestershire. Now run by husband-and-wife team Ben and Denise, Swallowfields has been in Denise’s family since the 1920s. They’ve taken the glamour of this era and combined it with all the home comforts you could think of to create laidback lodges comfy enough for up to six people and two dogs. You certainly won’t be needing a trailer to cart all your stuff for a holiday here. The list of what’s provided reads more like a fancy hotel than a campsite with fluffy bedding, bathrobes and slippers, towels and toiletries alongside a fully kitted-out kitchen diner, ensuite shower room, cocktail cabinet, woodburner, TV and wifi. Outside, the lodges have secure private gardens so you can happily let your dog off the lead while you soak in your hot tub, swing in the hammock, relax on the deck or cook up some campfire meals on the firepit. The on-site treats don’t stop at what’s included in your own lodge. Bikes are available to hire for exploring the lanes and pubs around the quiet village of Castlemorton and beyond. The kids can play make believe in the adventure castle and nature hideout, and grownups can choose a ‘treat yourself’ box, hamper or in-lodge spa treatment to make their break a real escape from the norm.

Local attractions

Enjoy the lovely local landscape on Castlemorton Common (10 minutes’ walk), where there’s acres of space to ramble, have a picnic, fly kites or walk the dog. A little further on, the whole of the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is open to you, whether you prefer gentle strolls, serious hikes or hurtling down a hill on a mountain bike. Watersports and trips on the Severn and Wye rivers are a great way of seeing the area from a different perspective. Ross-on-Wye (25 minutes’ drive) is a nearby launching point for kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding, or you could try heading to Upton-upon-Severn (15 minutes) for day boat hire. For family days out, the Georgian vision of a medieval castle at Eastnor (15 minutes) should keep you busy for a while, as should the flying displays at the International Centre for Birds of Prey (25 minutes) and the animals at Cotswold Farm Park (45 minutes). If you're travelling without the kids, maybe the Three Choirs Vineyard (20 minutes) will beckon instead?
