Hear that? The rustling leaves, the birdsong, the crunch of branches underfoot? Sounds like the woods are calling…

Nightingales Rustic Camping is a back to basics site where you can ensconce yourself among the trees at a peaceful Warwickshire woodland spot – this is a place that has plenty of room between pitches, and with so much thick foliage about there's a fair bit of privacy too.

Each plot here comes with its own toilet and shower facilities, so you can kiss goodbye those memories of queuing up to get yourself sorted before setting off in the morning. There are designated spots where you can light up a fire as well (it doesn't get much more atmospheric than sitting together around flickering flames as the setting sun streams through the trees…).

Nightingales Rustic Camping is a few minutes' walk from a farm shop where you can pick up a whole host of top-quality produce, and it's about a 10-minute drive to nearby Atherstone and its many amenities, which include a railway station, supermarket, restaurants and a leisure centre.

Although this site is pleasingly rural in atmosphere, Nightingales Rustic Camping is in a very convenient location – Birmingham city centre, Drayton Manor Theme Park and the market town of Tamworth can all be reached by road in under half an hour.

Location was lovely, so close to Birmingham but felt worlds away with the peace and serenity of the woods, esoecially loved hearing all the wildlife (and the cows!). Loved the fact that we had our own toilet block, and the fairy lights lighting up the way through the trees was a nice touch!

We arrived in the dark so found it a bit tricky to find the location, but a quick phonecall and that was all sorted, the farmer met us at the farm shop and then led the way, even getting our campfire going for us while we started to set up camp! Everyone we came into contact with were always extremely helpful and friendly - even when we parked right in a muddy patch in the field and needed help getting the car out, they were more than happy to come help push!

There was plenty of dead wood around the campsite that we were given free reign to use as firewood, and the layout of the pitch itself was super cosy and welcoming! Overall my partner and I had a lovely trip and we look forward to being able to go back!

'Real' camping where you pitch your own tent, build your own fire and cook yourself. Friendly owners and a great location with the farm close by - yet no other buildings in sight.

The peaceful woodland area is great for exploring and collecting firewood. Toilets nearby and if you need anything then you can simply pop over to the Farm. Would highly recommend if you want time 'off-grid'

Liked:	Basic camping, brilliant lay out with a communal log fire area with big log seats, very friendly and approachable staff, farm shop for meat and any other items you need, toilets in the wooded area for convenience. Highly recommend.

We loved how we could pitch up in our own secluded spot, the owner is so friendly and made sure we were happy before she left us to have an amazing stay.

If you’re looking for rustic back to basics camping in a woodland setting then this place is for you...we couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

We had our own fire pit which kept us lovely and warm.

Liked:	Wild camping feeling in the woods, allowed campfire, plenty of room. Really nice people, farm shop just across the road. Toilet straight next to our tents.
Disliked:	If you don't want to wake up to the sound of the cows it is maybe not the best site for you, we did not mind.

Local attractions

There are heaps of options near Nightingales Rustic Camping for busy bees who want to stick to the local area. For a restorative round of the green, take yourself down to Atherstone Golf Club (10 minutes' drive); tiddlers who find the games there rather slow-paced for their liking can be taken to the town's swimming pool (10 minutes) instead.

Also close by are Kingsbury Water Park (15 minutes) and Hartshill Hayes Country Park (15 minutes), where there are birds to spot, picnics to be had and a load of nature to take in. More outdoor jaunts can be had at Tamworth Castle (25 minutes), a fearsome Norman fortress overlooking the bustling market town.

And don't feel that you have to eschew indoor times just because you're sleeping in the open air – the slopes of SnowDome indoor ski centre (25 minutes) and fab aquatic displays at the National Sea Life Centre (30 minutes) are not to be missed. Kids been on their best behaviour, or need an incentive to keep them that way? The promise of a trip to Drayton Manor Theme Park (25 minutes) should do the job.
