General

  • Back to basics site five minutes' drive from Kinver
  • West Midland Safari Park and Go Ape within a 20-minute drive
  • Good dog walking nearby; food pub less than 10 minutes' walk away

A slice of the simple life in rural Staffordshire? Splendid. Make your way to Whittington Campsite, a back toba sics site five minutes’ drive from Kinver.

If you’re aiming to keep things pretty straightforward, you’ll be off to a good start with easy access from the A449, the main road that runs from Kidderminster to Wolverhampton. That road’s likely to be mighty handy throughout your stay, too – it’s a gateway to the area’s various attractions (which might include games of mini golf, walks on Kinver Edge or outings to West Midland Safari Park).

And, just as importantly, that road is home to a cosy food pub a few minutes’ amble away (no need for a designated driver – excellent). If you fancy foraging further, there’s a couple of restaurants, a tea room and more pubs in Kinver, plus a small supermarket five minutes’ drive away in Cookley.

Things are all quite simple on the facilities front, too: the large pitches field has access to a portaloo, fresh water supply and a waste water facility, but the rest has been left clear to allow a good chunk of space for everyone to spread out, have barbecues and/or play games of football as desired.

Furry family member wagging a hopeful tail at the idea of all that space? Pat them on the head and tell them they’re most welcome – there’s plenty of space for them to scamper about and some good walks nearby too.

Outstanding hospitality from Carol and Richard, who made us feel very welcome and had some great suggestions for places to see around the area.

The place is easy to find and within a short distance of the Stour Canal which makes for a lovely walk or family bike ride with its pretty bridges and stunning properties on either side.

It was easy to find a place to pitch our tent and despite being bank holiday weekend, it wasn’t too crowded so we enjoyed some nice space to
ourselves. Our 16months old even made friends with some older children who were showing her how to use a trampoline.

It is located by a main, busy road but it was surprisingly quiet at night.

Super clear sky at night which was perfect for stargazing. The sunrise above the hills on our second day was really stunning and worth getting up for.

As a starter site, we would probably recommend looking at improving the toilet facilities and maybe adding a basic sink for the washing up but we felt the online description and the price had set up realistic expectations for our stay and we thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Thank you very much Carole and Richard!

Friendly owners. Site was basic as described. Clean area. We enjoyed our stay.

Area to drain septic tank could do with an upgrade. Google maps didn't take us to site - bigger sign needed to help find location. Main road close by, but didn't keep us awake.

The owners were very friendly but seemed rather overwhelmed by the responsibilies of a campsite on a sunny bank holiday weekend. The massive trampoline was great for the little ones to make friends and tire themselves out.

    Disliked:

This is a new site and it appears the owners are still getting to grips with running it. They were very friendly but the site is not up to scratch yet - but it was cheap. It is on a very busy, noisy road so don't think you are going to a rural idyll just because the site is described as basic. Most of the field is not usable as it is not flat, so most guests were squashed on one side of the field with no room for awnings. The toilets are totally inadequate - the owners tried to keep them clean, but they are just caravan-style thetford-loos without running water. The site is difficult to find and not signed properly - I wonder whether the postcode on pitch-up is wrong. There are two gates that you have to get out of the car to open as they drag through the gravel and are too heavy for children or people with bad backs, and really inconvenient for families with only one adult. Larger caravans struggled to get into the field as it is a narrow lane with a right-angled turn through gates that don't open properly. The water hose is cracked and unhygienic and lying all over the floor. The owners were not around much if you needed them. On one occasion when I tried to contact them they were at work - I wonder why the site isn't their priority on a bank holiday weekend. The second time I tried to phone them one afternoon the phone was not answered as they had fallen asleep. There were issues with the guests that they should have been available to resolve, eg, dog mess, teenagers being left by their parents with a lit and smoky bbq, other young adults running their car while stationary for an hour (I have no idea why). All in all I'm sorry to say that I think the owners are just trying to make money out of a spare bit of land. If they want to do this properly they need to commit some additional funds and ensure there is someone responsible to oversee safety issues and facilities. However, I will say again that they were very friendly. Our time at the site was saved by the very large trampoline - the children were happy playing with new friends which makes for thankful parents.

From the manager...

We were expectin a review from you like this.. Other people on site were happy as we say basic . you mound about the people next to you . you mound about the people oppersite . one of the ladys said you were rude to her son who was 18 and not a teenager left alone.if you read the other review all the other people were satisfied only the busy rd. Was a dislike . perhaps you should go to higher class site .!!!!

Local attractions

Kinver’s not a big village, but it’s home to a very fine attraction in the Kinver Edge rock houses (five minutes’ drive), where a huge sandstone cliff and fort tower over the cave homes carved into the rocks. There are also some splendid heathland trails to tramp along, and in the summer hols there’s often a range of activities for kids (crafts, den building, bug spotting and other vital outdoorsy skills…).

Carry on the alfresco activity by tackling the range of obstacles at the 18-hole miniature golf course at Mini Pro Golf Parks in Wolverley (five minutes), or taking off to the Wyre Forest (20 minutes) for walks or adventurous rides through the treetops at the Go Ape park.

You might also like to set out on safari to see some big beasts roaming the plains of the West Midland Safari Park (20 minutes); if you’ve got the kind of weather that’ll keep them under cover, head instead to the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham (40 minutes) to walk under water at the 360-degree ocean tunnel.
