General

  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven on a rural Shropshire farm site
  • Direct access to the Offa’s Dyke Path; 40 minutes’ drive to Shrewsbury
  • Community kitchen on site; books and games; firepits to hire

You’ll soon see why this site is named after an oasis, as this rural spot is a pleasant wildlife haven, surrounded by the fertile Shropshire countryside. A stop along the Offa’s Dyke footpath, The Oasis Carreg-Y-Big Campsite is a relaxing rural retreat near the Welsh border, 40 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury, 25 minutes to Wrexham and 55 minutes to Chester. Make headway through the country by bicycle or on foot, with trails just outside the gates; let your dog tag along too, as friendly dogs are welcome on site on a lead.

Pick your preferred plot among the well-maintained grassy pitches beside the pony paddocks. Then, build a stash of snacks for the on-site picnic patch at the local shops within 10 minutes’ drive in Oswestry. This market town also has pubs, parks and a 3000-year-old hill fort for your perusal (or you could board a train to sights further afield at the nearby train station, also 10 minutes’ drive).

On site, you can turn your shopping haul into a proper meal in the on-site community kitchen (with kettle, microwave, fridge and freezer on hand) or simply pop the bits onto a disposal barbecue in the dedicated bricked barbecue area. Afterwards, lay back for some fireside stargazing, as firepits are available to hire and logs available to buy on site.

Handily, there are also unisex toilets and washrooms on site. And when you feel like sinking into a sofa, there are books and games to keep you occupied (coin-operated to keep the site eco-friendly).

Greeted on arrival, clearly shown where to pitch and what amenities were available for us to use. Immediately attended when electricity was tripped in the kitchen area and we really enjoyed the eggs for breakfast (with our bacon) which had been left out besides an honesty box, - which we were only too happy to pay for.
Shower and toilets were limited in number, but very clean and the shower was free and hot! Always a bonus after a days walking on Offa's Dyke which runs right past the field entrance.

    Disliked:

Camper van was ok - they had wheel blocks to level said vehicle, but trying to find a flat, dry bit of ground for tent was more difficult. Ok if you don't mind a bit of sliding about a bit during the night.

Good site, perfect for Offa's Dyke walkers09/24/2021

Really lovely quiet site, we were the only ones there for most of our stay. Caravan access was fine. The site is actually on the line of Offa's Dyke - we positioned our van right over it! We would go back if in the area again. Nice shower and toilet, although this was over the road. Any backpacker campers would find the kitchen facilities very useful, although we didn't need them of course.

    Disliked:

Chemical disposal point was not properly set up. If the site was busy you might struggle to find a level enough area to pitch on.

I loved staying at the Carrey-Y-Big Camp Site. We were walking Offa's Dyke path and the site is right on the route. It had a clean, spacious and welcoming kitchen area where we ate our breakfasts so we did not disturb other campers as we were early risers. The shower was wonderful. The sourounding country side is magnificent. The weather was just perfect so everything was at its best.

From the manager...

Dear customer
I would like to dispute your review.
For starters, you did change your booking day without any notice by phone or email, and you arrived on the day were we were fully booked. Despite this, we found you a pitch; and in response to the lady’s not so well mannered comments, we even offered a refund you were not entitled to, if you did not want to stay on the field. You chose to stay
In summary, I think your scoring is unfair, given dall our efforts to accommodate you despite you not letting us know of your change of bookings, on a night where we were full

Kind regards
Richard and Carmen

How about a tread around the local turrets? The Old Oswestry Hill Fort (10 minutes), Whittington Castle (15 minutes) and Chirk Castle (15 minutes) are all nearby. And within the same distance, Park Hall The Countryside Experience (15 minutes) has plenty of farm-themed amusement on hand, from alpacas and pig racing to outdoor playgrounds for a tumble.

Try out the rapids for yourself, perhaps by canoe or kayak too, from its various outdoor activity centres.
