General
- Family-run lakeside site with direct access to the A52
- A 20-minute drive from Newark; 25 minutes from central Nottingham
- Well-stocked fishing lake with several species; kids' play area
Whether you're an angling fan or not, after a night at Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat you may very well wake up and realise that you're hooked on these fab lakeside views.
This family-run site is an all-round wildlife haven: badgers, foxes, rabbits, geese, ducks and moorhens can regularly be spotted on or around the water's surface, while carp, tench, roach, rudd, chub and catfish prowl the depths beneath.
There are also plenty of trees around (sunset vistas over the one-acre lake are particularly splendid when viewed against a backdrop of weeping willows). The main field has even and well-kept grass and makes another pleasant spot to while away the afternoon…
Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat has loos, showers with instant hot water and a washing-up point that are kept in tip-top condition by the helpful site staff. There's also a kids' play area where the wee ones can zoom about and burn off any excess energy. Weather permitting, this family-oriented site also likes to set up outdoor games like giant jenga, badminton and swingball.
Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a barbecue-friendly site (just make sure all the hot stuff doesn't singe the ground). Whatton (10 minutes' walk) and Aslockton (20 minutes) are on hand should you fancy an evening out at the pub (the villages also share a handy railway station and post office).

Hopefully if you come back next year all the local attractions will also be open fully, so many things to do and see in a very short drive away. Bit restricted this year sadly. |

Local attractions
Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a well-connected spot indeed – the site is just off the A52, so jaunts to Newark (20 minutes' drive) or Nottingham (25 minutes) are a real doddle. Days out to the cathedral city of Lincoln (40 minutes) are also fully feasible.
Dipped your toe in aquatic adventure and eager for more? Whatever it is you fancy, the National Water Sports Centre (20 minutes) will probably have it covered – whitewater rafting, kayaking and something called lagoon wipeout can all be tried out here. Head to Holme Pierrepont Country Park next door for land-based action including segways, miniature golf, high ropes and a climbing wall. More sedate but equally special open-air times are to be had at Nottingham's Wollaton Park (30 minutes), where you can join the deer that wander the grounds of this former country estate.
Right, that's water and land covered – now for the skies. Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is half an hour from the National Space Centre, home to spacesuits, full-sized rockets and 360-degree planetarium shows. Newark Air Museum (20 minutes) has upwards of 70 impressive aircraft on display (aspiring captains also have the chance to sit in the cockpit).
