General
- Family-run site located between Sherwood Forest and the Peak District
- On the edge of Shireoaks village; Clumber Park 20 minutes' drive
- Free-range eggs for sale; five minutes' walk from a lake and canal
What makes this fine little site tick? It's hard to pinpoint just one factor, but between the animals to ruffle, stunning rural views and proximity to a thriving village centre, it's clear that The Croft Campsite is a cracking spot for a chilled-out outdoor break.
The Croft Campsite is on the edge of the Nottinghamshire village of Shireoaks, a scenic place indeed with a lake, a gorgeous parish church and a canal for waterside wanders. All this, along with amenities like a pub, fish and chip shop and a railway station, can be reached on foot in five minutes or less.
This small-scale, family-run site is home to a horse, sheep, cows and chickens (the last of which produce fresh free-range eggs that you're welcome to buy if you find yourself getting peckish). The tree-lined main field is nicely secluded, with views over the church and the surrounding countryside.
Being a laidback kind of place, dogs, barbecues and fires are welcome at The Croft Campsite. Loos, showers and a washing-up station are available; there's a freezer for ice packs as well, so any sarnies you prep for your travels should stay fresh no matter how far you roam.

Local attractions
Nottinghamshire is the fabled home of Robin Hood, and if you fancy following in his footsteps you can head down to Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve (20 minutes' drive), a well-preserved stretch of woodland with an 800-year-old oak tree and several waymarked trails. Further backcountry beauty spots can be sought out in the Peak District National Park, the edge of which is 35 minutes away by road.
The Croft Campsite is just a few miles north of the Dukeries, a stretch of terrain so named for being home to four grand ducal seats. Clumber Park (20 minutes) is one such regal spot, being the site of a stately home and 3,800 acres of parkland, farmland and open country. Welbeck Abbey (15 minutes) has an art gallery and café in a similarly gorgeous setting.
Cross over into Yorkshire if you fancy visiting Sheffield (half an hour), where you can go skating at the city's Olympic-sized ice rink, seek out curios in the Antiques Quarter, have a cheeky tipple at Kelham Island Brewery or take an urban stroll along the Five Weirs Walk. Also north of the border, Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes) has lions, tigers, bears and some cuddlier beasts besides.
