Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm: Cabin exterior

General

  • Luxury glamping site by the Midshires Way a mile from East Leake
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Rutland Water
  • Adults-only site a mile from East Leake; pub 15 minutes' walk away

As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end.

And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet.

Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area and free wifi across the site.

Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm.

When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Single-sex bookings of 2 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 2 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The shower facilities are closed until May 17, 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

The laundry facilities are currently closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

What a fantastic Pod - Really lovely, it had everything we needed and it was very well maintained and laid out. A fantastic place to stay and relax. Parking very close - a lovely set of walks and the surrounding countryside is very accessable. A short walk from a mainline station and a small village - where (We live in the city) everyone said hello! It was lovely to stay in the pod and walk into the village for food and general fitness.

We stay in Pods alot and this is by far the best Pod we have stayed in - highly recommended.

This place was fab, it was a birthday present for my husband and this was right up his street. Brendan and Amanda were fab, their customer service was excellent. As soon as we arrived at the Campsite, Amanda had come out to greet us and told us what is what. I had purchased some fire coal for the fire pit, as the weather was was raining and was dull, however Brendan did refund us on this.

The place was cosy, you are able to access and log into Netflix, Amazon Prime and any other stream of channels you may watch. This was great for us, as we wanted a chilled out weekend especially it being dull and wet all the way through.

Also main feature was the Alpaca's and horses were the main attraction and the views were amazing.

I liked the fact it was Covid Safe, as they Bio-fog their glamping cabins after every stay. Over all, i would recommend this to stay to all, and would visit it again.

Everything! Very comfortable and clean. Fantastic accommodation. Owner was very friendly and helpful. Perfect outlook with the views, horses and alpacas. We had a lovely relaxing stay, very peaceful and we hardly noticed any aeroplanes flying over which was not a problem at all. First time we have experienced glamping, and we loved it!!!

Brendan was a lovely host, even acknowledging our recent engagement with a bottle of fizz, chocolates and a petal heart on the bed - a lovely touch to have arrived to.
Clean throughout even the shared facilities which were very modern and well kept. Great location to local amenities inc pubs/shops.
BBQ/fire pit was excellent we BBQ’d every night and will be purchasing our own!
Loved the Alpacas, great entertainment to watch from the patio area.
Loved the portable speaker, we got a lot of use out of that!
*IGNORE any other reviews about noise levels (i.e. dogs barking/planes) planes do go overhead but nothing excessive*!

    Disliked:

Hard to fault the site but unfortunately on occasion we found that due to the facing direction of the patio area often found ourselves to be shaded from the sun. This was easily remedied by moving seats to the side of the lodge!

Found issues with the Wi-Fi however not a necessity as we spent little time on our phones anyway.

The camping pods are absolutely excellent. The standard of the pod and the equipment contained within it i.e. kitchen/cooking equipment, bathroom/shower etc. is very high and a lot of thought and money has gone in to the new venture.

The pod had been thoroughly cleaned before we arrived, the campsite is clean and quiet. The staff made us feel very welcome. There are a number of walks, pubs and activities within a stones throw of the site if you do your research.

5* will be visiting again. Thank you.

Beautiful accessible countryside retreat with stargazing and fire!09/12/2020

Absolutely love the setting - beautiful sky, rolling hills and countryside, and while there was the occasional plane going overhead, you really feel like you’re in a little bubble of calm. The light was gorgeous. The alpacas and horses are nice to sit and watch. This is a perfect spot for stargazing, and the fire pit makes it so easy to have a fire and watch the sky. The cabin is a brilliant self-contained apartment which, once you’re up the three steps at the front porch, is accessible. The shower is excellent and has a grab bar for those who need it. The kitchen and living room is very well designed and the bed is comfortable. The owners, Brendon and Vicky are extremely helpful and even gave me a hand getting my bags in and out! This is a great place to stay, and as someone with mobility issues, this was a perfect accessible countryside retreat!

    Disliked:

Small cleaning issues which was resolved - not their fault! All resolved.
Also note that the free WiFi hour starts from when you log on, and then will be reset every 24 hours. So if you arrive and log on at 3, you’ll have 3-4 connected, and then have to wait until 3 the next day.
I was surprised by the power plant in the distance but it’s not an issue! This really is a lovely place to stay!

Local attractions

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car.

Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school, four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world.

If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting

Must see
