Church Farm: Cow from the farm

General

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Feed the animals, hunt for eggs and walk the trails
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm

Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely little farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close... and have a splendid time while you're doing it.

The pigs and goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café.

In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought right from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. On Saturdays in the summer months you can join in the farm’s mighty communal barbecue and singsong... or just hum along if you're not much of a crooner; singing opportunities are not for everyone...

Dogs are welcome at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

I stayed in the wooded area with three friends and we had the best best time. The staff here were absolutely amazing from start to finish. Super helpful and lovely. Stupidly I left my car radio and lights on overnight and needed a jump and the staff did everything to help. I'm already looking forward to going back with my family as the farm looked great. I can't recommend this place highly enough and wanted to say a special thank you to the big guy who helped us more than once.

The staff were friendly and the toilet clean, ample toilet roll and without a stench!

    Disliked:

This place has many acres yet we were all squeezed into the same small field when a whole hill side sat empty... we were surrounded by parties breaking social distancing rules, with children left to disturb us and other quiet groups by playing far away from their parents (lucky parents!). Adult only section would be a big win. Fire pack is a complete rip off.

This is a lively camping site. We absolutely loved it, the animals, the harvesting opportunities, the green fields, fire and dogs allowed.

    Disliked:

The toilets not very female friendly, but maintained well. The shop is fairly expensive, so next time we will pack a lot more food as its also quite isolated.

    Disliked:

The dirty compost toilet, the small campsite , the price in the farm shop, the lack of hand sanitizer in the toilets, no light in the toilet , the constant petrol of the site manager, being told we could listen to music at our tent on a low level but being told off in a very rude manner, the shocking amount of rules to adhere to when there were large groups, kids screaming all day and dogs off leads, having to pay for a rubbish bags, awfull stay , we will not be visiting again worst camping weekend we have had this year

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too).

Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history.

Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles).

Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.

Must see

  • Knebworth House (10.1 kilometers)
  • Hatfield House (20.1 kilometers)
