I stayed for a couple of mid-week nights for some North Yorkshire Moors cycling. I'd booked a grass pitch without electricity staying in my campervan. I received a warm welcome at Reception with the site layout and facilities clearly explained. First and lasting impression was of a well maintained, clean site. For info, the holiday homes are in a separate part of the site from touring and camping. I was given the choice of where to park my van in the grass pitch general camping area. It was mid-week and slightly off-season so plenty of space. The grass pitch area is bordered by trees on a couple of sides which is great for shade and privacy but not so good with sap and general tree detritus landing on your vehicle/tent, I was aware of this from reading reviews so made an educated choice where I pitched. The grass pitch area is generally flat and while I was there had a combination of caravans, motorhomes, campervans and tents. It's not a particularly large site so the amenities block is never far from your pitch, the tent only area is the furthest away. The amenities block is modern, warm and clean. The facilities are segregated, the male facilities having urinals, 3 toilets, 4 showers and 5 basins from what I recall. Showers were warm and hot water in the basins. There was a rather unpleasant drains smell on one of the evenings. There is grey and chemical waste disposal at the block as well as washing-up facilities, which I used, and a washing machine and dryer which I didn't. While I was there the site was quiet in the evenings from a reasonable time. Some of the trees are home to a colony of rooks / crows, the lake has ducks and geese, the house (I assume) has peacocks, so the dawn chorus, particularly the crows/rooks, is quite lively (noisy). On one evening I cycled a couple of miles to The Crown & Cushion at Welburn, lovely food and beer (especially after a day of cycling), and friendly service. If you are into cycling, this is a perfect base, you just have to enjoy quite challenging hills if you head into the moors. I would return to the site, perhaps next time I'll bring an electric bike though!
