  • Working horse ranch set among the hills of Cattaraugus County
  • Allegany State Park 15 minutes' drive; an hour and 20 to Niagara Falls
  • Horseback trail riding available on site (prior booking required)
Wake up to life on a working horse ranch at The Crosspatch, a rural campsite in western New York State's scenic Cattaraugus County. Set over a sizeable 80-acre plot, this location is within easy reach of local attractions like Allegany State Park or the year-round outdoor adventures on offer at Ellicottville and is just an hour and 20 minutes south of Niagara Falls and the Canadian border. Camp facilities at The Crosspatch include simple but functional outhouses plus a pavilion where you can kick back and relax. There's also a small creek that runs beside the pitches, creating a laidback atmosphere where you can be pretty sure to find plenty of peace and quiet. The ranch specialises in American Paint Horses, an attractive breed that you're sure to get well-acquainted with during your stay. Looking to sort out some time in the saddle? Horseback trail riding is possible on the property – just mention that you're interested in it in the 'special requests' box when finalising your booking. The Crosspatch is about two and a half miles from the small town of Little Valley, where there are a couple of handy restaurants. For a greater choice of food options, or to pick up supplies for cooking back at base, head to the larger town of Salamanca (10 minutes' drive).

Local attractions

Aim for Ellicottville (10 minutes' drive) in winter if you're into skiing, or head over here in the warmer months for year-round activities like Sky High Adventure Park, a golf course, mountain biking and a mountain rollercoaster. Also close by is Allegany State Park (15 minutes), where there's a large lake for boating and swimming plus excellent hiking and fishing opportunities. Want to learn about traditional Mennonite life? Cattaraugus County's Amish Trail is approximately half an hour from base, with a range of interesting tours and itineraries available for newcomers. Feed your curiosity further with trips to Salamanca Rail Museum (10 minutes) or Seneca Iroquois National Museum (10 minutes) to learn about railroads and traditional Native American life. Further afield, the dramatic landscapes of the Allegheny National Forest are about half an hour to the south and make a great spot for scenic drives (especially in autumn). Finally, if you don't mind a slightly longer drive, you could just as easily head north up to the Canadian border and the spectacular Niagara Falls (an hour and 20 minutes) for a classic ride on the Maid of the Mist boat tour.
