  • Quiet wooded site five minutes' drive from medieval Besalú
  • Sadernes gorge, volcanic park, Banyoles lake within a half-hour drive
  • Swimming pool, playground, bar and restaurant serving local dishes
Wooded peace in a capital city? Admittedly this place stopped being a capital and a city several hundred years ago, but all around Camping de Besalú and the surrounding area there’s a sense of history stretching back thousands, even millions of years. Comfortable stays in the present day will be foremost in your mind, and they’re foremost for the team behind this site tucked away in the wooded countryside of Catalonia, about five minutes’ drive from the medieval town of Besalú. The bright and clean bathrooms have roomy sinks, steaming hot showers with disabled access and baby-changing facilities. Guests are welcome to grill up alfresco feasts on barbecues (try the botifara sausage… it’s unbeatable), but if they’d rather someone else did the hard work, the restaurant and bar serves a broad menu of snacks and local specialities. With an eye for detail, the restaurant terrace looks out onto the swimming pool, so you can be sipping a sundowner or cradling a coffee while the kids splash about. There’s also a playground to keep them busy and a pétanque court for family matches or international playoffs. Once the capital of a province that stretched into France and regarded as one of Spain’s best-preserved medieval towns, Besalú has all the modern stuff like shops, supermarkets and bakeries to keep you stocked up and stuffed with tasty local pastries.

Liked: Amazing hot showers! Easy check in! The receptionist was really helpful, letting us store our bikes in the reception overnight and showing us a short cut to walk to Besalu in the evening which was very kind and out of his way.

Power optional grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Open all year.

Disliked: Poorly maintained. No sun in winter. Muddy. Too far, and up a long hill drive, too allow for visiting the town. Pitches hard to approach in 7m motorhome.

Local attractions

Besalú's also worth a wander for its Jewish ritual bath (ask at the tourist office), its impressive river bridge and Micromundi, a somewhat fab little collection of miniatures and microminiatures. If the pool and the river views have you hankering for some watery antics, drive 20 minutes to Banyoles for swimming, fishing, kayaking and windsurfing on its lake. You can plunge into history here too, with a look at the town’s Neolithic village, prehistoric caves and Roman ruins. It’s half an hour to Sadernes for walks through forested gorges and dips in dazzlingly clear river pools, and the same to Olot, centre of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park whose green cratered peaks rear up suddenly from the surroundings. Head up Montsacopa in the centre of town for cracking views and walks down inside the crater (fret not, it’s been dead for the past 100,000 years). Depending on whether you want wide sandy beaches and sun loungers, deserted rocky coves or wetland nature reserves, it’s between 45 minutes and an hour to various very fine spots along the coast. For a city fix, wall-enclosed Girona is well worth the 40-minute jaunt, as it's stacked with museums, galleries, lively streets and tasty Catalan treats.
