It's free, quick and easy!
- Glampsite five minutes’ walk from Bolera Reservoir in Jaén province
- Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park 40 minutes’ drive
- Spacious pre-erected tents; swimming pool; restaurant; supermarket
In an unrivalled setting deep in untamed Andalusian countryside, Kampaoh La Bolera is just the place for active holidays with family and friends. This glampsite is 10 minutes’ drive from the outdoorsy hub of Pozo Alcón, and just a few minutes’ walk from lushly forested hills surrounding the pristine waters of Bolera Reservoir.
So what to do first? Have a frolic around with the kids in the swimming pool, supervise toddlers in the play area and challenge new-found pals to rousing games of ping-pong. If you’re after more challenging alfresco adventures, go kayaking and paddleboarding on Bolera Reservoir, canyoning along the Guadalentín River, or hiking, mountain biking and fishing in the hilly Peralta Natural Park (10 minutes’ drive).
At the end of an activity-filled day, you can return to your spacious (and pre-erected) tent on a pitch sheltered by holm oaks and Aleppo pines, revitalise under reliably hot water in the shower blocks and keep on top of chores in the laundry room.
Rustle up meals on the communal barbecues, or abandon any good intentions about self-catering and head for the restaurant; its breezy, tree-shaded terrace is open from breakfast through to dinner. If you’re needing to restock supplies, you can pick up all the basics in the handy small supermarket – which also sells a good line in local gourmet products and souvenirs – next to reception.

Local attractions
As well as boating escapades on Bolera Reservoir (five minutes’ walk), you can swim in the turquoise waters and stroll across the landmark dam wall. Take a pair of binoculars with you and keep a look out for vultures, eagles and red kites circling high in the thermals above you.
You’ll never be stuck for some sort of sport to do – but if you’re keen on exploring further afield, the limestone gorges and rugged peaks of Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park are 40 minutes’ drive away for climbing, biking and caving expeditions.
Dominated by the photogenic ruins of its crag-top Santa Catalina Castle, historic Jaén (90 minutes) is well-worth a day trip. Have a look at the revered Veil of Veronica relic in the handsome Renaissance-style cathedral, tour the colonnaded halls of the 11th-century Arab Baths complex – one of the biggest in Spain – and check out the Naïve paintings displayed in the Palacio de Villardompardo. Need a refuelling stop? Head for a Plaza de Santa María tapas bar and tuck into dishes flavoured with gourmet olive oil from the groves around the city.
