It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious KwaZulu-Natal site on the edge of iSimangaliso Wetland Park
- A half-hour drive from Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, a Big Five park
- Open-air pool, braai facilities and farmstall with fresh food
Can you name the Big Five? At the end of a stay at KwaZulu-Natal's Hluhluwe Bush Camp it’s to be hoped that not only will you be able to name the species* but you’ll also have spotted each one – and much more besides. (*If you can’t quite wait that long, the list includes elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffalo.)
Indeed this part of the world is something of a wildlife-spotter’s dream: South Africa’s oldest game park, Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, is half an hour’s drive away for your Big Five sightings (fingers crossed), and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is next door for encounters with a whole range of critters including hippos, crocs and frogs. With both of those parks come all manner of outdoor activities too, including hikes, horse riding, fishing and scuba diving.
Trips to both are highly recommended, but in fact you don’t even need to leave the site to start ticking off a list of local wildlife: pick a spot around the grounds and you can often spot nyala, reedbuck, duikers and the like frolicking in the pineapple fields next door.
Perhaps one of the choicest spots at this site is a sun lounger by the open-air pool, which has the bonus of being next to the farmstall – the hub for freshly prepared food (think sandwiches, soups and Dutch crispy fries) and drinks (coffees, herbal teas and juices) plus beers, wines, ice cream and lots of handy bits for the braai. Anything extra you need can be picked up at the shops in Hluhluwe, 20 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions
No doubt you’re already itching to get out and about, so it’s handy that the folk here have made that easy by creating a trail in their backyard, with hints on how to spot wildlife as you wander. For lengthier hikes, head out into iSimangaliso Wetland Park (entrance five minutes’ drive away) – there are also mountain bike trails and horse riding safaris to be had in the park.
Outings to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park (half an hour) are a must – not least because game drives here may spot the largest rhino population in South Africa. If you’re equally enthralled by underwater life, take a drive of just over an hour to Sodwana Bay for scuba or snorkel trips around the gorgeous coral reef.
If you’ve not been entirely successful on your beastie-spotting outings, up your chances considerably with outings to Zulu Croc (10 minutes) and Emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation Centre (half an hour). And if you’d like to mix in something a bit different, head to Dumazulu Traditional Village (25 minutes) to learn about local life – with singing, dancing and beer all on hand.
