Pitches

General

  • Peaceful family-run site in the South Holland region
  • Five-minute walk from tours and tastings at nearby vineyard
  • Within 45 minutes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague

Need a break from the pace of your normal life? At Camping de Oude Rijn, a five-minute drive – or short cycle – from the neighbouring town of Ter Aar in South Holland, you can slow it all down with some laidback activities.

Golfing fans, listen up: the greens at Zeegersloot golf club are five minutes from the site, where wannabe pros can do some practising on the driving range, take lessons and play their way round 27 holes, then thoroughly sample the eats and drinks of the bar-restaurant.

Anglers can throw out a line from the fishing piers at Zegerplas, under 10 minutes’ drive from the site, and reel in perch, roach, bream or pike. Zegerplas not fulfilling your fishing dreams? The Kromme Aar waterway or the further afield Noordeinderplas might tick the right boxes. If you’re more of a sipper than a fish and chipper, Camping de Oude Rijn is a tippler’s dream: the Naescas vineyard for tours and tastings, is right next door.

Back on site, soak up some of that vino by cooking up some fish on the barbecue and tucking in beside your campfire. If you didn't have any luck with the rod and reel, there are plenty of shops in Ter Aar to pick up the essentials.

Please note

A charge of €1.00 ($1.73) applies for the use of the shower.

  • Liked:

The Bell tent was absolutely wonderful. VERY spacious, the heater we borrowed was perfect. The beds were comfortable. Very friendly and attentive staff. He even apologized for the rainy weather. Personally, the rain was a bonus as the sound on the tent was soothing. We felt very safe and comfortable and definitely plan to stay there again.

    Disliked:

We could not get the wifi to show up to connect, but that was ok for us. Not a necessity.

Lovely campsite run by a English family. Ideal location for the tourist areas of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft etc. Set in natural and quiet countryside. Canals and town of Ter Aar nearby. Stayed in our own touring caravan with awning. Pitch size is excellent. Well done to Elliott, Alex and family. Thankyou.

Location a little remote (which is our fault for not reading before booking).
Had to drive out of campsite to get fresh supplies if needed.
On site bike hire would have made a difference

Enjoyed our stay at the Camping Welch. Located on a quiet country road, and not too far from town, especially when you're on bikes. Staff were very helpful and friendly, as were our neighbours. We ended up staying for 2 extra nights on top of the original 2 we booked.

Local attractions

Camping de Oude Rijn is well placed for those who want the peace and quiet of the countryside but also days out on urban adventures: the site is central to The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

On rural days, take a trip to Nieuwkoopse Plassen nature reserve for boat trips, water safaris, canoeing, walking and birdwatching, or head to the Netherlands’ oldest botanical gardens at Hortus Botanicus to see what a 16th-century garden looked like. If you’re staying at Camping de Oude Rijn during the spring, a trip to the tulip garden at Keukenhof is an absolute must.

Travel buddies getting on your nerves? Never fear, there’s a non-violent way to fix everything: climb inside some plastic bubbles and let your rage out with a game of bubble football at Bumperball in Leiden. If that whets your appetite for more activity, waterski, wakeboard or kneeboard at the Wet ‘n Wild Social Club at Zegerplas.

There are plenty of theme parks in the area for kids and adults to explore: take a stroll through the history of the Netherlands – from prehistory to the Romans and on to the Middle Ages – at Archeon Museumpark, 10 minutes from Camping de Oude Rijn, or head to the amusement parks at Drievliet or Duinrell to raise your adrenaline on the rides.
