Spacious grass pitches

General

  • Family site opposite the beach, 10 minutes' drive from Hook of Holland
  • Half an hour's drive from Rotterdam Zoo and Delft
  • Beachside café selling breakfasts, snacks and fresh pancakes

Beach buffs of the world, don thy swimming kit and prepare for some serious lounging. You could barely be any closer to the beach than at Strandpark Vlugtenburg, a family site that’s separated from the North Sea only by a great swathe of sandy beach and dunes.

Look north from this spot on the outskirts of the small town of 's Gravenzande and you’ll see the beach stretching away in front of you for several kilometres. 10 minutes’ drive to the south is the port of Hook of Holland, making this a mighty handy first stopping point if you’ve just arrived on the ferry from Harwich. With The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam all around half an hour’s drive away, it’s also a good spot to park yourself for several days to combine a bit of city culture with some beach action.

When they’re not occupied with splashing in the sea or building sandcastles, kids can spend time at the playground, play games with friends on the panna soccer field or join in with the various activities organised for them on site in high season. There’s also an indoor games room, and board games can be borrowed from reception.

Very fably, the site has its own pancake café, overlooking the dunes and the playground. (Resistance to these local treats is futile, so give in and take your pick from the menu of sweet and savoury options.) Two restaurants are a couple of minutes’ walk away, on the beach.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The shower facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

The toilet facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

Nice large pitches. Toilets and showers spotless.
Short walk to miles of golden sandy beaches.

    Disliked:

As it was winter the main loo / shower block was closed, unfortunately this is used to feed the water to the mh service point and toilet drop. Had to fiddle with connections to try to fill water from a tap on the camping area, but they are push button so not ideal.
Nice site though, been twice now and enjoyed both visits.

We loved how quiet the park was when we were there. It was also lovely to be so close to the beach for nice walks. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

    Disliked:

It would be helpful if the showers had English translation so that we would know how to get hot water when showering. It took a couple of days to work it out even though I had asked a staff member why there was no hot water.

Location, good for ferry at Hoek van Holland and short walk to lovely beach and beach bars. Excellent cycling on paths through dunes and easy ride to Den Hague.

    Disliked:

Site was a bit scruffy. Reception kept very short hours, closed when we arrived from ferry at 5.30pm. When open two staff sat behind computer screens then took an hour's lunch together. Restaurant closed early evening amazing as we stayed in high season, tried to reserve a table for breakfast on the day we left only to be told that 11.00am was earliest they served breakfast !!!

Polite reception staff. They gave us a refund when we left the site early due to bad experience.

    Disliked:

We have been caravanning for 12 years and never seen showers and toilet facilities as dirty as these one's. One of the showers didn't work at all. Also there simply are not enough to go around when this site is busy. Investment is needed here to bring this site upto date. The pathways are clearly not maintained and are now becoming over grown. There is no governance either. There doesn't appear to be any senior person managing the site. Very noisy after midnight. This seems to be acceptable at this site.

The open style of field. People just walked through your pitch constantly. Shingle roads all around site was a pain as it got between your saddles or flip flops. Bar was rubbish. Toilets were poor.

It’s so close to the beach, the beach is huge! Great cycle paths by the beach. The restaurant didn’t open for breakfast until 11am. So it’s best to order it to your pitch.
Once I worked out how to get hot water in the shower (press the button after turning the tap) it was a brilliant powerful shower. Only 6 minutes hot water though!
Jumbo supermarket 5 mins drive away. You park for free in a multi-storey and the town square also has lovely places to eat and drink by jumbo.
The ground can be hard so bring extra tent pegs. I bent a few.
All the staff speak excellent English thank goodness, as my Dutch is terrible.
Was a bit windy being by the beach, so I needed all my guy ropes.
    I’d go back again.

    Disliked:

I stayed there on the Sunday passing through and then again on the Friday night. Sunday the reception closed at 3pm and so they left my car park barrier pass in a key safe. The trouble is I missed the explanations about how to order pizza or breakfast to my tent and didn’t get a flyer about the facilities. So I didn’t quite get to enjoy the place to it’s fullest on my first night. So I’d definitely suggest you arrive early if it’s a Sunday. Friday night was a different story.
    WiFi was free but slow.

Local attractions

The beach is a major attraction here; aside from all your usual sea- and sand-based fun, you can also sign up for a range of activities including horse riding, land yachting, kitesurfing and paddleboarding, or try your luck with a fishing rod.

A good way to get around and see some of the area’s beaches and other natural areas is to make like a local and get on your bike. Site staff can suggest routes, including cycling through the dunes to Kijkduin, heading to the Staelduinse Forest or taking the ferry to Maasvlakte to go seal spotting.

For a kid-friendly day out, it’s half an hour’s drive to Rotterdam Zoo, where you can see lions, polar bears and monkeys among others. Aquatic animal life is on display at Sea Life Scheveningen, a 40-minute drive from the site.

Also worth a day trip is the town of Delft, half an hour away, to shop for the famed blue and white porcelain, visit the old and new churches and see the Vermeer Centre, where the artist lived.
