It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site a few minutes' bike ride from Horst and Melderslo
- Overloon, Arcen and Toverland amusement park within a 20-minute drive
- Great area for cycling; pick up maps and route ideas on site
It’s not compulsory to bring a bike along to Camping De Eendenkooi, but it is a mighty fine idea. The Limburg surrounds of this family-friendly site are prime cycling territory: mercifully flat and generously supplied with plenty of cycle paths taking in some of the countryside enticingly known as ‘Strawberry Land’ for its bountiful berry fields.
Concerned about veering off route? Fear not – there are plenty of maps about, and several themed routes to follow (including the Rose Route and the tasty-sounding Blueberry Route). Once you’ve got your bearings, pedal off to nearby villages, pick up a path along the banks of the Maas river or head for the sandy landscapes of the Maasduinen National Park. Closer to home, a bike is a useful thing for popping off to the shop and bakery in Melderslo, less than a kilometre away, or heading into the centre of Horst, a 10-minute ride away.
Bike-free types needn’t miss out on the berries, either – pick up a map and head out for a stroll among the soft fruits, or seek out a kid-friendly route like the Knights and Rovers path for a change of scenery. A fishing pond and lake beach are a short stroll away too, and there’s plenty more to take in with the local museums, amusement parks and castles.
If you’ve not entirely worn yourselves out with all of the above, time on site can be spent at the play area, the games room or setting up a game of pétanque; for something a tad gentler, stroll around to meet the farm animals that live on site.
