It's free, quick and easy!
- Safari tents at a quiet Christian site with a swimming lake and beach
- A 20-minute drive from Almelo and Ommen, and 40 minutes from Emmen
- Restaurant, play area, snack bar and heated pool with retractable roof
It’s tricky to pick the swishest thing about Vodatent at Familiepark de Vechtvallei. Is it the kitted-out safari tents with all sorts of swanky facilities included? Or perhaps it’s the heated swimming pool with its retractable glass cover for when it rains? Maybe the paddling lake and a scenic beach that beckons you for a gentle snooze…?
Fortunately, the only decision you need to make is to book in at this Christian park set in a wooded part of the East Netherlands’ Overijssel province, a peaceful place between Hardenberg (10 minutes’ drive) and Ommen (20 minutes), and try out all the facilities for yourself.
There’s much for the kids (and teens) to get stuck into as well with a programme of activities designed to amuse. A playground with a climbing frame, slide and sandpit is here for free-roaming small fry, along with playing fields full of basketball, volleyball and football courts. Indoorsy types can spend their time undercover in the games room, while tiddlers who adore alfresco activities can splash in the paddling pool.
When thoughts turn to food – as they no doubt will when you’re on a hol – head over to the restaurant and snack bar or order sandwiches from the bakery delivery service. Barbecues are also available to hire if you’re planning on grilling up meals. Speaking of rentals, this site also has go-karts for guests with a need for speed.

Local attractions
Vodatent at Familiepark de Vechtvallei is in the Vecht river region set among a leafy woodland that’s well worth hiking and biking through. If you’re up for a cycling trip, rent a bike from the park and set off on the six-kilometre journey to Hardenberg, which has paths for pedalling on snaking off from the town. The two-kilometre ride to the Oldemeijer meanwhile, a play pond in Hardenberg forest with a beach and an island, is a fab choice for family days out.
Fancy fishing? Grab your rod and get over to the Vecht just outside the park. Trying a bit of sailing and canoeing on the water is possible here, but if you’d rather have someone else steer a craft on your behalf, boat trips passing by the posh buitenplaatsen, the countryside manors constructed by the elite in the 17th and 18th centuries, are also available.
The park is in a nifty position for car trips to local towns and cities as well, like Almelo (20 minutes’ drive) with its gardens, museums and castles, and Emmen (40 minutes), home to zoos, an open-air museum and a casino.
