  • Fishing, lake swimming and outdoor and indoor play areas
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, bowling alley, café and restaurant
Just… wow. From fishing to football to bowling, this Gelderland park has enough to do to keep all holiday sorts happily occupied for weeks. De Scherpenhof is a big and handsome recreational park in the green IJssel river region, a few minutes' drive from Terwolde and next to a sizeable lake and marina for fishing and swimming. There's an indoor pool on site too for swims in all weathers, and a large outdoor pool open in summer for alfresco dips… or you might prefer to stretch out on the sunbathing lawn while the kids whizz around the big outdoor playground… If the weather is being less than co-operative, retreat indoors to the bowling alley (snazzily lit by disco lights, if you please) to trundle bowls, play billiards or table football, or to take the kids to the roomy region of PlayCity for covered play and a ball pit. (Handily, PlayCity is also where you pick up your sarnies and bread in the morning, sensibly ordered by you the day before.) More? Lots. Also are your disposal are two all-weather tennis courts, a football pitch, table tennis, and an amusement arcade – as well as a café, a restaurant, a summer entertainment programme, a kids' club, live music…

C Field powered grass site

Liked: Large pitch size, peace and quiet, time to unwind. However I am pleased I was not on the main field as this was very open and exposed with little or no privacy between pitches.

Disliked: Water taps were difficult to find, toilets were quite a distance from the pitch, and, as warned in the info, there was no toilet paper. Fair enough, at least warning was given. But, as the toilets were quite a distance, so were the washing facilities, so to wash dishes required quite a walk. Wifi was patchy and kept cutting out. Quite a basic site really. But the tranquility made up for that.

C Field powered grass site

Liked: Having water nearby. Surrounding area lovely. Interesting towns and villages in vicinity.

Disliked: Lack of sufficient electricity, only 4 Amps totally unacceptable now. Too many steep speed humps liable to damage both car & caravan. Poor Wi Fi signal, inadequate. Noise allowed after 2200 hours. Insufficient facilities for campsite capacity, reported faults not attended to. Entrance control barrier not monitored from Reception and too far away. Pitches very uneven and poorly maintained, campsite had slightly neglected appearance. ,

Local attractions

Recreatiepark de Scherpenhof's local village of Terwolde is on the IJssel river, four kilometres from one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands at Deventer and within a triangle edged by Deventer, Apeldoorn and Zutphen. Start your sightseeing off at Deventer, also on the IJssel, for the city museum in the 15th-century Waag/weighing house; a toy museum behind the Waag; access to watersports and ice skating, and the lively main square of The Brink for markets, nightlife and enthusiastic sampling of the local honey cake. At Apeldoorn (25 minutes' drive), access handsome hiking and cycling trails around the Hoge Veluwe National Park, or stay in town for the zoo and the Julianatoren amusement park as well as a wander around the famed 17th-century house and gardens of Het Loo Palace. Scenic strolls are around the villages of Vaassen and Epe, both around 15 minutes' drive from the site; if the kids make uncooperative noises at the thought of that, the theme park of Walibi Holland is around 40 minutes' drive away at Biddinghuizen.
