  • Family-owned park on a cattle and sheep farm, with sand dune views
  • A 15-minute drive from Hoachanasrom and an hour from Mariental
  • Calm and quiet desert spot with campfires and barbecues permitted
If you prefer your holidays with hardly any people in sight – and barely any creatures around but a few four-legged friends – Jansen Kalahari Guest Farm is just the ticket. At this back-to-basics park in the rural Hardap region, with the sweeping sand dunes of southern Namibia as its spectacular backdrop, your main neighbours are the friendly family who own the farm and their sheep and cows. A 15-minute drive from the nearest settlement, Hoachanas, Jansen’s a calm spot for getting away from it all... there’s often nothing but the 100 species of birds who call the area their home to greet you here. And, as you’ll be surrounded by such huge open spaces, it won’t come as a surprise that the sunsets and starry night skies are nothing short of sublime... Mariental is the biggest town in the area, about an hour’s drive away, with a couple of supermarkets to hand if you’re keen on cooking at one of the many barbecues dotted around the grounds. Coming from Windhoek in the north? Make sure to do your holiday shop at one of the stores in Rehoboth, an hour and a half’s drive from the park, as there's not much else along the way. While stays at this site are all about relaxing on the sand with a book or your thoughts as company, that’s not to say adventure-seekers aren’t catered for... drive for 25 minutes and you can take to the skies for views over Bitterwasser Pan and the Kalahari Desert on a small plane from Bitterwasser.

Local attractions

Southwards from Jansen Kalahari Guest Farm, Hardap Dam’s an hour and 10-minute drive if you want to shake off all that desert dust. There’s freshwater angling here, with kurper, barbel and yellowfish, along with carp and bass, ripe for the picking. Fishing permits can be picked up from the office. Hardap Dam's the biggest in Namibia and is surrounded by a game reserve home to springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and ostrich. You can spot the animals on a guided game drive or take a hike on one of two paths, either the nine or 15-kilometre trails, to see them in your own time. At Maltahöhe a little over two hours away, pitch up at the Oahera Centre and learn about the traditions of the native Nama people, known for using tongue clicks as part of their language. You can also ride a donkey cart or head on a walking tour to find about the desert plants that grow in this sparsely populated region.
