If you want to pull out all the stops and impress a certain someone in your life, plan a holiday at Viatura Omun. At this peaceful, adults-only site half an hour's drive away from the city of San Miguel de Allende, a romantic stay and total relaxation awaits amid the lush rural landscape of the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico.
You’ll be sleeping in a luxury safari tent. Well… ‘tent’ might be somewhat reductive to describe these pretty spectacular accommodations, which have a spacious bedroom with a real bed (and a four-poster bed, at that) and plenty of storage for your belongings.
And it gets better in the elegant and light-filled bathroom, where double sinks should ensure that there’s no squabbling in the morning for who gets to brush their teeth first. Start the day with a soak in the freestanding claw foot bathtub while taking in the views.
What are your plans for the rest of the day? How does chilling on a sun lounger by the pool sound? You can swim a few laps, then drink an expertly mixed cocktail from the bar. Or maybe you’d rather spend your break in splendid social isolation with your beloved, making the most of the private Jacuzzi and hammock on your tent’s wooden deck.
Active couples can explore the surrounding area on foot or on two wheels (bicycle rental is free) or have a go at archery. And you can end the day in the tasting room, sampling the locally produced wines.

Local attractions
Dolores Hidalgo is the birthplace of the prolific 20th-century ranchero singer José Alfredo Jiménez. Interesting sites include the house where he was born and his tomb, in the shape of an oversized sombrero. For the full Jiménez pilgrimage, you might also want to visit his monument, anchoring a busy crossing on the Avenida Sur.
The fortress-like exterior of the 18th-century Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco (20 minutes’ drive) hides a richly decorated baroque interior that has earned the site comparisons with the Sistine Chapel (not to mention a UNESCO World Heritage inscription).
San Miguel de Allende (half an hour) spreads around the lush Jardín Allende plaza, dotted with topiary trees and overlooked by the tall Gothic spires of the church of San Miguel Arcángel. Nearby is the Museo Histórico Casa de Allende, with displays on the history of the town and the country’s independence movement.
