- Wild camping-style site 10 minutes' walk from Civago
- Good base for walks on Via Matildica or climbing Mount Cusna
- Spacious pitches with campfire area, drinking water and shelter
It’s very possible to be immersed in full countryside but still within easy reach of a village for the essentials of life – and Civago all’Ombra del Cusna proves that. This laidback rural site in Emilia-Romagna has all the hallmarks of wild camping. Still, it’s only about 10 minutes’ walk to the village of Civago when you’re looking to track down a grocery store, bakery, bar or bus stop.
This is a fabulous spot to pitch up in if you’re looking for quiet country walks – it’s close to strategic points on multi-day walks such as the Via Matildica and Via del Volto Santo, and it’s just as good a base for climbing peaks like Mount Cusna and Mount Prado. When you return to camp, cool your feet in the Dolo stream, which runs about 300 metres from the site.
The land here has been deliberately kept very natural, so you’ll have the feeling of the freedom of wild camping while being sure that you’re doing it in a safe and legal way. The field stretches to more than a hectare so there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out, and for groups to camp together in a cluster.
It’s worth noting that there are no toilets or showers on this site, so you’ll need to be self-sufficient on that front. There is water, however – both for drinking and for things like cooking and washing up. There’s also a campfire area to help you keep warm at night, and you’ll have access to a small building for storage or shelter in case of bad weather.

Local attractions
Craft beer and live music? You’re in for such things at Rifugio San Leonardo al Dolo (half an hour’s walk). Just don’t go overboard, as you’ll need to be feeling alive for the nearby 21-kilometre hiking or mountain biking loop Rifugio Segheria dell'Abetina Reale (half an hour), which has many a mountainous view.
Hike to the ruins at Torre dell’Amorotto (45 minutes) gives you just a taste of the historical sites that are within driving distance of the site – Museo del Presepio di Antonio Pigozzi (15 minutes’ drive) has frescoes and artwork belonging to Antonio Pigozzi.
If you’re not quite finished with hiking the local landscapes, Rifugio Battisti (25 minutes) is well-known for its huge green slopes and local food specialties such as sweet pastries or polenta and stews. Wild swimming is the reward for finding the Golfarone waterfall (20 minutes). As for a bigger challenge, Mount Cusna (25 minutes) is the second-tallest mountain in the north Apennines.
