- Well-maintained eco resort in a remote area surrounded by deep forest
- A 50-minute drive to Gosaba on the edges of Sundarbans National Park
- Lodges with modern bathrooms; river tours available in the local area
Take a tropical trip to the world’s biggest river delta – while limiting your impact on the earth – with a stay at Sundarban Royal Eco Resort in West Bengal. This spot on the edges of southern India’s Sundarbans National Park specialises in purposeful and environmentally conscious hols beside the Bidya's banks.
Popular activities on this very waterway include boat trips through the 10,000-square-kilometre coastal Sundarbans mangrove forest that spills into Bangladesh with the purpose of getting a glimpse of endangered animals including the Ganges River dolphin, the estuarine crocodile and the Royal Bengal tiger.
Vessels tend to travel towards a peaceful mangrove beach at Kotka where you can get views over the area – and hopefully a look at some of the creatures who roam around it – from the Sudhanyakhali watchtower. More of a landlubber? You can also get here on a tuk-tuk within 40 minutes.
The tigers were in fact the main reason this resort was set up: the organisation behind it wanted to work with locals to protect the animals by creating jobs and preventing poaching. And while these rare species may not venture near your lodge back on base, deer, monkeys and tropical birds are all regular visitors to the area around the site…
Animals seen, you can rest in your lodge with its modern bathroom while dusk sets in while snacking on treats from the stalls at the Jogendro Bazar a 15-minute walk away.

Local attractions
Want to learn more about the wildlife in Sundarbans? You can stop off at the Mangrove Interpretation Centre upriver (about an hour and 45 minutes by car) or book a birdwatching trip to see ospreys, the black-hooded oriole and the mangrove whistler in the trees.
If you're on a tour of India, you'll likely be making your way from Sundarban Royal Eco Resort to Gosaba afterwards, the nearest town about a 50-minute drive away, or even Kolkata (four hours and 40 minutes by car). This famed Indian city has plenty of attractions and activities to keep you entertained for a few days either before or after your tiger-spotting trip, including the palatial Victoria Memorial, colourful temples and the huge Howrah Bridge.
You could also splash about on the waterslides at Nicco Park, shop at Park Street or catch the cricket at the Eden Garden grounds.
