  • Small luxury site in rural Pays de la Loire
  • A 20-minute drive from Sillé forest and lakes recreation area
  • Fishing lakes within two minutes' walk; an hour's drive from Le Mans
There is indeed a touch of magic about this site, buried deep in the Mayenne countryside. Surrounded by forests, guests at Magic Bus Lakeview stay on a terraced hillside, with nothing interrupting the view or the peace. A few minutes' walk away, the pair of fine lakes look like the sort of spot you could meet a forest sprite in... though, more realistically, you might catch a fish. Air of enchantment aside, the team behind this forested gem have thought about the practical side of things to ensure a stay in maximum comfort. Showers, sinks and toilets for everyone are housed in a wooden shepherd’s hut with opening windows; just behind in a secluded terrace with a cherry tree, there's an outdoor bath for scrubbing yourself under the stars. You're welcome to cook up a storm on barbecues and campfires, and the communal canvas kitchen backs up your catering operations with a fridge, cooking equipment and somewhere to dine under cover. The team are happy to tell you about the country walks nearby and to point you in the direction of the lakes. For bars, bakeries, eateries and big shops, it’s a 20-minute drive to Sillé-le-Guillaume, at the southern end of the Normandie-Maine regional park.

Local attractions

A five-minute drive out of Sillé-le-Guillaume takes you to a fab forest recreation area around a scattering of lakes. Sunbathe on the beach, swim, sail and canoe the clear waters, zipwire your way through the trees and walk or bike your way round the many trails. If you’re more in a mooching round town mood, there are weekly markets in Sillé as well as in dozens of villages and towns in the region, while the medieval clifftop town of Sainte-Suzanne (half an hour) has a castle and endless cobbled lanes to wander down (excellent local beer, as well). For history, or rather the bit before history, head to the fab caves at Saulges (50 min minutes); get up close to the rock art, learn more about the earliest occupants of the Loire at the museum and feel like your Palaeolithic ancestors as you walk the fine moorland nearby spotting black sheep and aurochs. If you're after faster thrills, it's around an hour's drive to Le Mans, home of the famed 24 Hours race, regular car and truck meets and a substantial museum; if you're tempted by the roar of the engines and the smell of burning rubber, you could try the go-karting track next door.
