What an utter stunner. Le Domaine des Vaulx is a lakeside site in the Pays de la Loire department of Mayenne, in a spectacular locale of water, trees and green countryside you'll hanker to make your domain for as long as you can get away with: have a browse of the pics to see just how splendid is this setting.
It's somewhat splendid all around too, as the Mayenne region is cracking land for cantering around on horseback, with a network of bridle paths that spans over 1,000 kilometres, including 85 kilometres of trails along towpaths and 128 kilometres along old railway lines.
Non-equine adventures are a cinch to sort from here, such as paintballing at the adventure park about 20 minutes' drive away; walking, hiking, climbing and investigating the Saulges caves and surrounding canyon within 40 minutes, and, further afield but much recommended, taking a low-tide trip to the island of Mont-Michel, just off the Brittany coast about 80 kilometres to the north and west. Brittany capital Rennes is just under an hour away.
For days on site (also much recommended around this pretty place), there's a small fishing lake to cast off at (catch and release only please), as well as an outdoor pool and a Jacuzzi for watery times to suit all activity levels. Takeaway food is available; for more supplies, local village La Baconnière is a couple of minutes' drive or about 10 minutes' walk away.

Local attractions
This scenic setting is one where you should delve into the Pays de la Loire, Normandy and Brittany surroundings as much as poss, such as at the region's designated Towns of Art and History including Laval 15 minutes' drive away as well as Jublains and Evron within 40 minutes.
Another Town of Art and History about 40 minutes away is Mayenne, home of the Château de Mayenne medieval fortress and its accompanying museum. There's also Fougeres 35 minutes' drive away, with its 12th-century castle said to be the biggest in Europe, and the Place aux Arbres garden with spectacular views of the castle and the medieval Old Town below.
A tiptop day out for all ages is to the canyon and caves of Saulges, about 35 minutes' drive from the site. This prehistoric site has around 20 caves unearthed so far, two of which (Margot and Rochefort) are open to the public for those keen to examine its prehistoric remains.
After that, descend the canyon via the footpath to reach the comely village of Saulges and its two handsome old churches, or tackle some of the canyon's rock climbing routes: there are 150 or so around the surrounding cliffs.
