- Summer activities including food nights, day trips, shows and sports
- Lake fishing, snack bar, hiking trails and local produce
Halt, acquire your beverage of choice, and settle down to peruse these pics.
And how pretty they are too. The quiet lakeside site of La Chanterelle is in the Auvergne region (spectacularly scenic), in the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park (ditto) and is surrounded by woodland made up of douglas firs, pines and spruces (you can see where this is going..) The lake has a beach for watersports or idle hours; for scenic Auvergne strolls, rides and adventures, the Allier river is nearby for waterside walks – or canoeing – and the Livradois-Forez park has over 150 towns and teeny communes to potter around.
The site is set up as a quiet space, but lays on a good selection of sports activities, day trips, shows, food nights and a whole heap more all day long and into the evening in summer. There are trails aplenty to hike too; mushrooms to forage for in the forest; lake fishing available on a daily or weekly licence... and a big snack bar to fuel up at or catch up with sporting events on the big screen.
La Chanterelle is 900 metres above sea level, a kilometre and a half from the Haute-Loire commune of Champagnac-le-Vieux, where there's a market every Friday morning. Local produce and general groceries are on sale on site, along with fresh bread and pastries baked daily in summer.

Local attractions
The site's well placed for all sorts of outdoor activities, such as swimming in the lake (lifeguarded in July and August), fishing from spring to early autumn, or foraging in the forest for mushrooms and wild fruit.
Mountain biking and horse riding are both within easy reach, as is bungee jumping for the truly adventurous... Or take it easy and ask the team about visits to one of the local farms, to sample organic produce, help out with the animals and try out famed regional dishes like aligot and truffles.
Further afield, have days out to communes like Brioude or Lavaudieu within 25 minutes' drive, La Chaise Dieu within 35 and Blesle within 45, and around the many small churches in Haute-Loire hamlets. Ally and its old mills and windmills is 45 minutes' drive south; to the south east, an hour and 10 minutes or so will take you to Le Puy-en-Velay, with its statues and monuments carefully set on rocks.
The theme park of Vulcania is an hour and a half away.
