It's free, quick and easy!
- Eco-friendly, tree-lined site on the edge of a river with a pond
- A 25-minute drive from Montluçon and 15 minutes on foot from Huriel
- Fishing, bar, common room, board games and kids’ play areas
If being near water is always a winning element when whittling down where to stay on a hol, add the peaceful Auvergne haven of Camping L'Alternatif onto your travel list – it's got both a river running through its grounds and a pond on site…
Fishing is of course a much-pursued pastime at this shaded, tree-lined site a 25-minute drive from the centre of Montluçon town, but there’s plenty more to keep you occupied here as well, from miniature golf and horse riding to board games and puzzle sessions. Lounge in the garden or the covered communal area while the kids are off at the open-air playground or indoor playroom – there’s lots of space in the grounds for impromptu ball games too.
If the younger members of your gang are feeling particularly active, take them into the countryside around this Allier department park on lengthy bike rides (ask Camping L'Alternatif’s friendly owners about trails to follow) or zoom towards Lac de Sidiailles (about half an hour away by car) for canoeing, pedalos and swimming as well as cable car rides.
Not up for venturing too far from the site? It’s a mere 15-minute walk to the cultural commune of Huriel and its couple of 12th-century listed monuments; traipse towards the La Toque Keep in particular for its museum about medieval history and the area’s wine-producing heritage (so you’ll know exactly what to order when back in the bar at the park…).
A shared kitchen is also at the site if you’ll be needing nosh to accompany your tipple(s).

Local attractions
Did you even have an Auvergne hol if you didn’t step foot near a castle? The answer is ‘non’, so make your way over to Château de Boussac (half an hour’s drive) to gaze at this turreted structure along with views out over the Creuse valley.
Five minutes further along is a geological spectacle – the 40 or so balancing rocks of Pierres Jaumâtres, in the Mont Barlot hills next to a tree-climbing park with a zipline, laser quest, trampolines and bouncy castles as well as marked trails for family treks.
Once the hiking’s done, meander over to Montluçon for the medieval sights in Auvergne’s second-biggest town – the Château des Ducs de Bourbon, timber-framed houses and Romanesque churches are all must-sees. But best of all? Quite possibly the MuPop modern music museum, with the largest collection of instruments in France.
