- Luxury wooden treehouses five minutes’ drive from Laparade in the Lot
- La Maison de la Noisette 20 minutes’ drive; Parc du Griffon 45 minutes
- Terraces with stunning views and hot tubs; natural swimming pool
Surrounded by greenery, forests, orchards and meadows in 30-hectares of private grounds in the Lot Valley, Les Coteaux Lodges are possibly the smartest treehouses you’ll ever have seen. When you arrive, you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but in fact, it’s only five minutes’ drive to the shops and restaurants of the sleepy rural town of Laparade.
Built entirely of wood, each lodge has splendid vistas over the forest and is designed to a very high spec, with custom-made wooden furniture and stylish modern décor. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to appreciate the views from the bedrooms (luxury linens supplied) and living space, and the ensuite bathrooms are all tastefully tiled and equipped with walk-in showers as well as his-and-hers marble basins.
Each unit has a well-designed outside decking area with picnic table and deck chairs – all the better for soaking up the views – or you can hop into your private hot tub and salute sundown with a glass of something chilled in hand. Also on site, down by reception, is a natural swimming pool surrounded by landscaped gardens, and you can also hire mountain bikes to get out and about in the Lot Valley.

Local attractions
When you’d like to explore locally, there are lots of walks and bike rides straight from the lodges, ranging from an easy hour’s looped walk through plum orchards to a more challenging 2.5-hour cycle ride with viewpoints overlooking historic villages like Grateloup-Saint-Gayrand (an hour and 30 minutes by bike), with its ancient church, and the windmills at Tourtrès (an hour).
If you’d care to learn about local agriculture and regional produce, head for the farm at Folies de Sophie, where you can buy taste and buy prune jam. At the Farm and Prune Museum (both 15 minutes’ drive), you can also taste local Agen plums and tour the displays of ancient agricultural equipment, while La Maison de la Noisette (20 minutes) offers guided tours of hazelnut groves and tastings of their harvest too.
Kids with you? At the Parc du Griffon (45 minutes), they get to meet Highland cows, long-horned goats and dromedaries, before running off some energy on the zipwires and waterslides. And if they’ve still going full pelt, take them to paddle a kayak up the River Lot from Le Mas-d’Agenais (25 minutes).
