Torn between an urban getaway and a rural retreat? Don’t know how to decide between colourful civilisation and quiet countryside peace? At Prados Zona de Camping, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Villa de Leyva in the Colombian department of Boyacá, you won’t have to opt for just one. This is the best of both worlds: the site is on the outskirts of Villa de Leyva, so a 10-minute stroll from breweries, museums (the Museo del Carmen and casa museos of Antonio Nariño and Antonio Ricuarte come highly recommended) and spectacular cobbled colonial streetscapes... but days out in nature are within easy reach too. Iguaque National Park is less than half an hour from base and is a top spot for scenic explores, hikes up to lakes and cloud forest rambles, and there’s cycle hire on site for any pedallers who fancy zipping around some sky-high Colombian routes. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, venture into town for local eats or wander out of your comfort zone with a stop at the Granja de Avestruces ostrich farm (15 minutes away) for ostrich burgers in the restaurant. In the evenings, head back to the site to bask next to the campfire and soak up the views of the mountain ranges that fringe this part of Boyacá.

Local attractions

Exploring Villa de Leyva is a good start to your Colombian break, but there’s plenty more outside the town that’ll keep you around even longer: bring dino-obsessed kids to Gondava theme park, take a horseback tour of the area, or pay a visit to Casa Terracotta (hailed as the largest piece of pottery in the world) and poke around its rooms, all within 15 minutes’ drive of the site. Get a taste of the Colombia of the past with stops at Sol Muisca and the El Infiernito site, where you can learn about indigenous peoples and ancient cultures, or step back into the present with an afternoon at Viñedo Aim Karim and Viñedo Umaña Dajud vineyards for tours and tasty tipples. If you’re up for a longer jaunt, pile into the car for the three-hour drive from Villa de Leyva to the Colombian capital of Bogotá. Get images of Narcos out of your head right now – this is a fab modern city, home to the type of vibrant culture you only get from having millions of people in one place. Unsurprisingly, there’s plenty of history to explore, but there are also botanical gardens to stroll through, mountains to climb, street art to marvel at and delectable eats on every corner.
