For peaceful stays in surroundings that simply demand to be explored, head to Finca San Pedro in Sogamoso, in Colombia's Boyacá region, where days are well spent navigating the rugged ecosystem and visiting nature reserves.
This place has been in the family for more than 70 years, so the owners know a thing or two about what makes a decent stay. Surrounded by pretty flowers and palm trees, it’s a peaceful place to return to after a day spent hiking in the mountains, and guests can further unwind with on-site massages or sessions in the sauna to relieve achy bodies. Yoga is taught here too; if you’re not that bendy, hammocks are dotted around for some quiet time with a good book (or just a quick nap).
The friendly site owners are also pretty expert at suggesting local outings: they can organise horse riding excursions, or sort tour guides if you’d like some company on treks through Páramo Oceta and Páramo Siscunsi. Lake Tota, half an hour from the site, is a top spot for trout fishing – take your catch back to the site to cook it on the communal barbecue (and there’s a supermarket around 15 minutes’ walk away if you don’t fancy hunting for your own dinner).
For other ways to keep busy back at base try your hand at Tejo, a traditional Colombian throwing sport, have a game of volleyball in the garden or check out the ball games and board games available in the games room.

Local attractions
For some nearby culture, the Archaeology Museum of Sogamoso (a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive) displays archaeological findings in the area, and there are a couple of pretty churches to see in the form of Catedral de San Martín de Tours (five-minute drive) and Iglesia de Morca (20 minutes).
In Nobsa (15 minutes) traditional shops sell crafts made from wool, wood and leather, and the Marqués de Puntalarga vineyard is here too, for a taste of Colombian wine. For some extra indulgence, the thermal hot springs in Iza (25 minutes) are good for a warm wallow.
Further out is picture-perfect Playa Blanca (one hour), where you can laze on the white sandy beach or opt for something a little more energetic with watersports such as kayaking and sailing.
The impressive waterfall Cascada Salto de Candelas is about an hour and 45 minutes away – the hike to the waterfall (which isn’t a particularly strenuous one) will take you through a tropical jungle for a sight of the spectacular tumbling waters.
