The Sleeping Shepherd: The view

General

  • Cosy adults-only shepherd's hut 15 minutes' walk from Manorbier
  • A 10-minute drive from Tenby and 20 from Barafundle Bay
  • Sea views from the private deck; direct access to the coast path

If this is what real-life shepherding is like, then it’d be a miracle if you got to the end of your hols without jacking it all in and signing up for a crash course in sheep keeping.

The Sleeping Shepherd lifestyle (admittedly unlikely to be one that bears much resemblance to full-time animal husbandry…) is a fine one indeed, mainly involving roaming around a particularly pretty part of Pembrokeshire, chilling out on your private deck sipping wine with a sea view, and cosying up in a comfy handcrafted hut for peaceful slumbers.

This peaceful little glamping site is 15 minutes’ stroll from the coastal village of Manorbier, where there’s a small supermarket, a pub and a tearoom. Folk travelling without a car can get here easily from the station 20 minutes’ amble away, and then continue local explorations by bus or with wanders on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which can be accessed on a direct footpath from the site.

Walks on the coast path are highly recommended of course, as are outings to some of the area’s stunning beaches (Barafundle Bay, a frequent entrant on ‘world’s best beach’ lists, is 20 minutes away by car). But perhaps even more highly recommended are lengthy periods of hanging out on your deck, gazing out at the spectacular views over Manorbier Bay towards St Govan’s Head.

A kettle, toaster and hob are in your hut so you can create some breakfast to go with the view, as is a fridge to keep the wine chilled (and the bangers, if you’re planning a barbie…).

Please note

A charge of £0.20 ($0.39) applies for the use of the shower.

Great Sheapards Hut in a beatiful area with amazing views and scenery. Everything was there if we wanted to stay in or wanted to venture out to explore. Joe was a great host and explained all we needed to know on arrival and kept in contact when we had a couple of queries our end. We will hopefully be back soon. :) Toby and Ellie.

Loved staying here. A overly walk across the fields to an amazing cove and the swimming was superb. Coast path means you can walk as far as you like every day. Alternatively you can stay put in this lovely well kitted out hut. Loved the outside bath either gazing at the stats or sat in the rain, both were fun.

When the weather was not so great the hut was cosy and warm. The shop in the village has pretty much everything you could need and the Local pub was relaxed with decent food And a log burner so no need to drive anywhere. Perfect for a place to relax and switch off.

Thank you for a very lovely stay

The only thing that I struggled with was the mattress not being particularly comfortable so it impacted on getting a good nights sleep for me.

The view from the hut was beautiful and really enjoyed the outside bath. The little hut was equipped with the essentials and the outside bbq was just perfect for making a quick meal. There is so much to do in the surrounding areas, we really recommend taking the coastal walk from the hut or visiting the many castles.

    Disliked:

The only complaint which I guess is down to personal preference however the mattress wasn’t very comfortable, we would have preferred something a little firmer.

The welcome was really warm and friendly and the shepherd's hut was spotless. It had everything we needed and the views from the balcony were fantastic! Not rated child friendliness as we don't have children and not rated wifi as we didn't use wifi whilst we were staying in the hut.

Local attractions

No one would judge you at all if you spent your entire break on Pembrokeshire’s gorgeous beaches – there are plenty of them to pick from. Start at your local, Manorbier beach (25 minutes’ walk), or stroll to Skrinkle Haven (half an hour) before continuing along the coast path to Church Doors Cove and the sea caves at Lydstep.

Jaunts further afield might take you to the resorts of Tenby (10 minutes) and Saundersfoot (15 minutes) for boat trips and some well-reviewed restaurants, or west to gorgeous Barafundle (20 minutes), Bosherston (25 minutes) for a walk past the lily ponds to the beach, or Freshwater West (25 minutes) for surfing and cracking lobster rolls from famed Café Môr.

If there’s another thing that Pembrokeshire’s famed for, it’s castles… there’s one in Manorbier, and a couple of other fine examples in Carew Castle and Pembroke Castle (both 15 minutes). And although you’ve not brought kids along, who’s to say you can’t have a day out at Oakwood Theme Park (25 minutes) or cooing over the creatures at Manor Wildlife Park (10 minutes)?

Must see

  • Pembroke Castle (9.4 kilometres)
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (11.8 kilometres)
  • Pembrey Country Park (33.2 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Tudor Merchant's House (6.5 kilometres)
  • Stackpole Estate (10.2 kilometres)
