Stretched across 10 acres, with open space all around and within easy striking distance of St Davids and Solva… Ffynnonddewi’s a super spot for a break in pretty Pembrokeshire.

‘Back to basics camping as it used to be – but with better bathrooms’ is how the folk here see their site. Stargazing around the campfire is one of their fave pursuits, so they’ve kitted the place out with firepits and will happily sell you some wood to stack up in them. Barbecues are welcome too, with supplies to be sourced from the delis of St Davids or the bigger supermarkets 15 minutes away in Haverfordwest.

There aren’t any leisure facilities on site, but frankly who needs them with all sorts of beaches, coastal walks and outdoorsy antics to be had so close by? Nippers with energy to spare have plenty of space to run about and play games on site, and there’s a separate six acres next door where dogs can be liberated from the lead for some dashing about.

And those bathrooms? They’re far from basic, with proper toilets and hot showers to hose off the sand after a beachy outing. There’s also a washing-up area for easy post-dinner cleanups and wifi to keep track of what the rest of the world’s up to.

Welcoming, relaxed and well set out. Arrived around 9pm on the motorbike and we were met by Gareth the owner who showed us to the pitch - really helpful yet also let us get on with things. Due to covid they had put up individual portaloos next to each pitch area, which were nicely spread out and although it slightly impacted on sense of wild it was also handy, especially when weather was unsettled! The sound of the little birds in and out of the undergrowth, the wind and distant mooing of cows was pretty much all that could be heard. Beautifully quiet. When we had a day of full on wind and rain, Gareth came and said we could make use of the barn/garage to sit in and cook our food, which was a lifesaver as we were in small tent with the bike. He also let us park the bike there as the field got quite muddy. We walked to the coast from the campsite (2miles) though the path through the local farm was a bit confusing. Also a short drive from St David’s and the magnificent Pembrokeshire coastline. The campsite is a nice size - there are no dramatic views yet it is wonderfully peaceful, well laid out, friendly and with the right amount of amenities. Gareth had some great ideas for developing the site (composting loos etc) which I liked. A great place for small kids as well as felt very safe and contained without feeling hemmed in or cramped. We heard an owl on our first night which was lovely.

Disliked:

The shower temperature was a little temperamental. It was all too easy to accidentally catch the lever when turning which would turn the shower off or change the heat setting. It just took a bit of getting used to - not a major problem.

The pitches are level and amply spaced and limited to only 15 - giving you great privacy.
Gareth and Luci showed genuine interest in making sure everyone enjoyed their stay. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Our hosts have put a lot of thought into the site and consequently we enjoyed:

. Breakfast rolls/baguettes delivered to your tent
. Free firepits - with onsite log purchases ( delivered to your tent)
. Phone charging stations
. Large playing area for kids to run around
. Well lit and maintained toilet/shower block
. Ample rubbish disposal and recycling facilities
. Ample parking
And, most importantly; a quiet, brilliant campsite with welcoming hosts.
We highly recommend pitching up here and look forward to the improvements planned for next year!

Glad you guys enjoyed your stay.

I think just about every site could do with extra facilities over the Bank Holiday weekend, we have set our selves up with a third more toilets and twice as many showers as is recommended for site licensing. It is difficult to get the balance right between peak time requirements and the rest of the season.
We will probably have a composting loo or two next year which should take some of the pressure off of the other facilities.

Wi-Fi is always going to be an issue for us, we already spend a small fortune providing wi-fi across our site.
The internet comes in through a remote wi-fi network and runs at around 30 Mbps which is a fantastic speed for such a rural location(BT line runs at at below 1 Mbps), however it can't cope with the amount of streaming being demanded of it, nowadays, when we are full.
It is more than adequate for browsing the internet and sending the odd email and we do make this clear in our handout. We are looking for a solution for next year.

We had a wonderful time with Gareth and Luci at Ffynnonddewi. We loved the remoteness of the location and met some lovely campers whilst on the site. The kids loved congregating in the middle for a knock around with the site football or just playing games and enjoying the open air and space. Beautiful space to sit of an evening and enjoy one of the firepits provided. We enjoyed the nearby beaches of Whitesands and Widemouth Bay and excursions to St Davids, Fishguard and Tenby. Overall, the overarching beauty of Pembrokeshire and the friendliness of Gareth and Lucy as hosts. The vegi breakfast roll on our day of departure was scrumptious and Gareth was always on hand if you needed anything. Great site to which we will definitely return and would highly recommend.

Local attractions

Pembrokeshire’s famed for its beaches – and rightly so, for they are many and varied. Stride forth on foot from Ffynnonddewi and you’ll get to the nearest little beach in about half an hour; for something somewhat more massive, it’s a 10-minute drive to the two miles of splendid sands at Newgale, or 20 minutes to Whitesands. Both are popular surf hangouts too, with kit hire and guidance to be had.

In between the beaches, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs along all 186 miles of the county’s coastline and makes for some cracking days of sea-view strolling. Should you be hankering after something more energetic, activity centres 15 minutes away in St Davids can hook you up with days of kayaking, paddleboarding, coasteering and climbing.

It’s worth sticking around in St Davids for a while too, to take a wander around the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, and grab a bite in one of its independent restaurants or pubs. It’s also the place to sign up for boat trips to Ramsey Island, home to Wales’s most sizeable grey seal colony.
