A campsite with its own tearoom – now doesn’t that sound like a fine idea? And not just any old tearoom, but an award-winning licensed tearoom in the lovely Carmarthenshire countryside…

This is exactly what guests will find when checking into Tor Cefn Farm, high up in the Gwendraeth area about 10 minutes’ drive from Kidwelly. The tearoom here is open from Thursday to Sunday, serving up breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas and homemade cakes along with a good selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks, beers and wines. They open up for evenings on an ad hoc basis on summer weekends as well.

Of course, you’ll want to work up an appetite for all this tasty fare: and that’s easily done in this scenic part of the world. For starters there’s a little woodland walk on site (where you can sometimes spot buzzards and red kites), and you can take a good uphill walk to the top of Mynydd Llangyderyn in about 25 minutes. There are plenty of cycling routes around too, and you can get to the Wales Coast Path with a drive of about 20 minutes or the Brecon Beacons National Park in about half an hour.

Back on site, it’s not all about the tea and cake – there are also chickens, ducks, sheep and goats to meet, and you may have a visit from Freddy the inquisitive cat. Facilities at the camping field are fairly basic (just a composting toilet, drinking water tap, a chemical disposal point and washdown area) but there’s a washroom with proper flushing loo and hot water up at the tearoom (about a 250-metre walk from the pitches).

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

This campground/park has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

I was horrified at their rudeness and cheek to charge what they did , the toilet/ wash facilities were completely in accessible as was the water tap due to tearoom customers, if there was a private function the open hostility from the couple was distrubinDespite saying it is child friendly and pet friendly,with lots of walks, is completely false. All this couple are interested in is taking your money. No privacy from tearoom visitors, or couple, bins never emptied on, barbed wire everywhere, he has destroyed the campsite with his Tractor, all campers got stuck in the mud at least once and only stayed one night. A pitch fork was left in the middle of the field for three days and still not removed by the time I left. Had a new tent and groundsheet ruined due to chair n beds puncturing it from seriously uneven ground. When you to go use the taps, their is no drainage whatsoever, and vehicles just sink in the ground, so if in larger vehicle you won't stand a chance. Tearoom is apparently aware winning, but all my food took forever and was served cold and again highly outpriced. If you pull in to check in for your booking, seriously had parking availability as the again tearoom clientelle took over Only walks are on farm take five mins but incredibly hazardous with barbed wire fences and trees rocking in the ground, it's a disaster waiting to happen. The lane is quite dangerous to walk on as very narrow and the camps owners certainly didn't drive with much caution or consieratio. They had no respect whatsoever for the paying customer , waking me up at four am with their antics of driving by, putting their own rubbish and tearoom rubbish out . I had several injuries to spraining my ankle on the ground was appalled the only time either one was pleasant was when they saw me leaving. I have stayed on some very basic campsites my time and not an inexperienced camper but my new tent was nearly ripped to shreds as with it being an air tent was blown away whilst queuing to use the wash facilities,which I never got to use, due to one of two pegs holding guy ropes to secure tent where seriously insufficient due to the poor condition of dangerously uneven ground. It took four pegs , never in all my years camping have I had to do this.
I asked to order a cup of tea and they said they had a booking in an hour so I would have to wait half an hour to be served, I said that was fine, could I order a cup of tea and have some water for my dog? At the time they had several customers, the woman was vile and more or less spat at me to get my own water from the standing pipe as she was busy and I would have to wait for my tea. One of the customers raised her eyebrows at her attitude as I was visibly upset. I got my tea forty five mins later, my dogs took serious exception. To the way I was spoken to and treated, barking every time they come near me The guy made a comment and asked me my opinion on the camp ground, couldn't believe it, felt like saying isn't that down to you to be responsible for. If I had any suggestions for this couple, it would be get out of the hospitality business, I went away to get away from the rat race, not be terrorised by it and overpay for the privaledge. They are incredibly good at doing absolutely nothing and being very terse and stressed .making themselves look busy. I was left with the distinct impression they were opportunists, preyed on vulnerable customers and were very sanctimonious in not being backward in trying to invoke sympathy for their situation. To charge eight pound for a full English that had no blackpudding, served cold and took forty five mins to cook and serve to my mind is outrageous. Forty five pound for a pie lunch, lot of tea, two bottles of wine, one of which was for another vulnerable couple having the distinct misfortune to frequent this site.
I went to Wales to experience Welsh culture, the only thing Welsh about this place is the name of the farm,

Wow where to start! We're certainly pleased you will not be returning to Tor Cefn!
First the Tearoom:
You turned up with two very large German Shepard dogs over which you had no control. We love dogs and well behaved ones are most welcome in the tearoom, unfortunately we had to refuse entry to you as your dogs behaviour was so disruptive and offered you an outside table. And yes your dogs did take exception vocally to everything and everyone around them. We cook everything from fresh and this takes a time and you arrived without booking while we were busy serving other pre-booked customers. According to our tickets your breakfast took just over ten minutes to be served. You did indeed raise some eyebrows but not for the reasons you give. Nobody at any point spat at you! We have never served a cold cooked breakfast, we do not have 'full English' on our breakfast menu, our full Welsh doesn't include black pudding but we would have been happy to add this if you had asked, our full breakfast is currently £6.50 not £8. You did have a full cream tea after consuming a full breakfast!! There is a McDonalds five miles down the road which maybe would be much better suited to your needs. You '£45 lunch' consisted of £6.95 worth of food and the rest was bottles of wine you took back to the campsite to drink alone!
Now the campsite:
As it was early in the season there was only one other pitch booked that weekend and they left us a 5/5 review on google including some photos. Campers have complete privacy. There is a drinking water tap and a separate tap by the tank for emptying chemical toilets in the camping field - why you had to constantly drive to the tap in the tearoom carpark every couple of hours is beyond us. The campsite bins are emptied regularly and are normally adequate for a full campsite - however as a single camper staying three nights you alone manage to fill the campsite bins to overflowing (including unbagged dog poo in the general waste (yuk), completely fill our commercial bin at the tearoom and at your pitch leave a huge amount of rubbish, discarded camping equipment, half empty bottles and alarmingly, a half used bottle of bleach and some laundry powder! I have emailed Pitchup the photos. The campsite is level and well drained. The only activity on the drive at 4am is the milkman only on a Monday, who takes great care not to disturb.
You claim to be an 'experienced camper' but your tent was so badly erected it blew down in the breeze, (how you came to be 'queuing' when you were the only camper is odd) and yes you did inexplicably manage to get your overladen car stuck where you drove across the field to empty your toilet because you couldn't be bothered to walk!
We would suggest if you sustained any injuries they would be from trying to manage your out of control dogs who you let run unrestrained across our field.
We and our staff were polite and courteous to you throughout your stay despite your exasperating behaviour. I'm sorry the only time you felt we were pleasant to you was when you were leaving - I'm not sure why this would be? Thank you for your recommendation that we 'get out of the hospitality business' our recommendation to you is to give up camping, go to dog training classes and learn to appreciate and respect the countryside and small businesses.

Liked:	Lovely cafe. Andy the owner was really friendly. It was very wet on the ground and we were the only campers so he said we could pull into a lay-by to camp the night rather than getting stuck on the field. Very helpful! The toilet was clean. Lovely area.

Local attractions

There are several country pubs a few minutes’ drive from the farm, but if you’d like to see where some of their provisions come from, stop by at the White Hart Inn (15 minutes’ drive), which has its own microbrewery, take a tour of Jabajak Vineyard (35 minutes), or head up to the visitor centre at Penderyn Distillery (50 minutes).

There are lots of lovely spots to visit along the west Wales coast: head to Cefn Sidan beach (20 minutes) for a long, long sandy stretch, visit Dylan Thomas’s former home at Laugharne (half an hour) or cross into Pembrokeshire for days in Tenby (45 minutes).

More active times for the kids can be had with the crazy golf, dry slope skiing and bike hire at Pembrey Country Park (20 minutes) or the many attractions of Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (40 minutes). You should also plan to stop in at Kidwelly Castle (15 minutes) or head up to Llandeilo (half an hour) for a walk to Dinefwr Castle.
