Walks in west Wales and pet-friendly stays in a peaceful country setting… what a lovely location is Laugharne View Caravan Site. Bringing a dog along or not, this park on a working smallholding has spectacular views over the Taf estuary and Caldey Island, so it’s a first-rate place for a break soaking up the Carmarthenshire scenery.

With paths to ply all around, it’s also a splendid spot for walks that should appeal to those on four legs or two – it’s possible to potter over to Llansteffan, a couple of miles away, directly from the park for visits to a wide sandy beach (make sure to check for seasonal restrictions if you're taking a dog) as well as a castle that dates back to the 12th century. From there, you might choose to extend your walk on the coast path or settle on the beach to fish for flounders and bass.

More interested in strolls that result in supper? A pub and a Thai restaurant are within a five-minute walk, and the eateries of Carmarthen – the oldest town in Wales – are just over 20 minutes away by car. If you've got a bit more time in town, browse the boutiques or ride on the antique Gwili Steam Railway.

If you’re firmly sticking to country pursuits, stay on site to peer at the pigs on the farm, take the dog for a run around the spacious grounds, or set up a camping chair and use the wifi to help build tomorrow’s itinerary. The site's Hayday outdoor bar and café can provide drinks and eats to fuel all such activities.

Liked:	Very peaceful site with great views, small, friendly owner/staff. Great location for a walk straight from the site. Strong wifi signal - good enough to stream a film without any buffering while we were there. Pitches close to toilet block.
Disliked:	Toilet block had no real heating - so was pretty much at the same temperature as outside - which will be fine in summer but was chilly in late October

Friendly welcome from the owner set us up for a great stay.
We only stayed one night as we were dropping or son off at uni in Carmarthen but the facilities on this site are more than adequate for longer stays.
The views and sunsets are incredible from the large, flat pitches overlooking the estuary.
Don’t be put off by the portacabin toilets because they were impeccably clean and of a higher standard than a lot that we’ve visited!
All in all a great gem of a find and we’ll be back for sure when we visit our son. Fantastic.

Disliked:

Nothing to not like but just a word of warning, be careful on the roads as there was a lot of tractor activity when we visited. Take it easy.

Liked:	We knew in advance of booking that the site had limited facilities, but the toilet and shower block was very well kept and clean. Each plot has its own water and electricity. The views are exceptional, but I would reserve the highest praise for the owners (met Sian, who was charming and helpful) and the locals we met in the Farmers Arms pub - all were welcoming and friendly.

Local attractions

While Laugharne’s visible from the park, it’s a 25-minute drive away around the estuary to this pretty village famed for its castle and poet Dylan Thomas’ writing shed. For more of the area's history, National Trust attractions further away – like the Roman-era Dolaucothi Gold Mines (an hour’s drive) and the handsome house and park at Dinefwr (50 minutes) – should also feature on your to-do list.

Also inland are many adventures, including the mountain biking trails of Brechfa Forest (55 minutes); swing back to the seaside and cycle more sedately along the Millennium Coastal Path if thrill-seeking on two wheels sounds a little bit too much for your tastes.

Of course, you’re also never far from the coast in this part of Wales… Pembrey Country Park’s miles and miles of sandy beach are a 45-minute drive away, and the shorelines of the Gower Peninsula and Pembrokeshire are also less than an hour away.
