  • Eco-friendly, off-grid site on a North Wales smallholding
  • 30-minute drive to Chester for the cathedral, amphitheatre and zoo
  • On-site shop with local produce; barbecues and campfires permitted
If you’re in need of a bit of proper down time, how about an off-grid, 10-acre working smallholding in the North Wales countryside? You’re in for a scenic stay at Wild Cherry Camping, too – it’s part meadow and part woodland, and the secluded spots you’ll call home are tucked away for hideaway hols. If you’re here for the peace and quiet, stay close to the farm and get acquainted with the resident goats, pigs and poultry. In the company of restless kids? There’s plenty of space to keep them occupied; the two-acre hay field is a handy spot for blowing off some steam. And you can take in a bit of history while you nose around the area, too – the land was originally owned by Chirk Castle as a tenanted farm, with the holding sold off in the early 1900s. Set the kids off to find evidence of stone quarrying in the wood and World War II bomb craters at the far end of the meadow. When evening rolls round, get the campfire going and tuck into some barbecued grub (local produce can be grabbed from the on-site honesty shop, and there are small supermarkets, a butcher and a greengrocer a five-minute drive away in Chirk for more supplies). There are composting toilets on site, as well as a flushing toilet and shower facility affectionately nicknamed ‘The Hurry Up Wagon’. The place is off-grid but a communal washing-up area has drinking water and fridges and freezers, and the helpful owners can sort you out with phone and device charging at the house.

Local attractions

Wild Cherry may be in a secluded spot, but its border location make it a top pick for getting out in North Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire. Stay put in Wales to conquer some of the castles nearby – Chirk Castle is a mere 10-minute drive and you’re in for pretty views from the hilltop Castell Dinas Brân ruins (15 minutes). Slightly further afield is Powis Castle and its gorgeous gardens (40 minutes), while Whittington Castle (10 minutes) is over in Shropshire. Spend some time in Chester (half an hour) to visit the cathedral and Roman amphitheatre, with a wander of the Chester city walls for good measure. You could also stroll along the riverbank, browse the shops or make a day of it at Chester Zoo. More kid-friendly days can be had at Park Hall Countryside Experience (10 minutes), for tractor rides, pony grooming and plenty of indoor and outdoor play areas, and there are more animals to meet at Tŷ Mawr Country Park (five minutes). Llangollen Railway (15 minutes) is the spot for steam trains and themed days.
