On site

General

  • Peaceful and secluded farm site on the banks of the River Severn
  • Private stretch of river and pond available for fishing
  • Breakfasts, café, firepit hire and farm shop with local produce

What a lot there is to do around this peaceful and secluded Mid Wales site a short hop from the Wales/England border. Take your pick from fishing on Brook House Farm Camping and Caravan Site’s own stretch of the River Severn, hiring a bike to pedal around the Welsh Marches, or meandering around the nearby meadows for flora and fauna spotting… all in a lush countryside setting between Welshpool and Shropshire’s county town Shrewsbury.

You may be meandering between countries on day trips but one constant in all this is the pristine views on site, with the park set in pretty countryside on the banks of the River Severn with buzzards and the occasional red kite soaring overhead. A spotlessly clean shower block is to hand for guests' use, along with a washing-up area on site.

The site is based in the grounds of the Brook House Farm B&B, where you can have breakfast. Or tuck into nosh at the café, use the squeaky clean on-site kitchen, or hire a firepit to sizzle supper under the stars with local produce and essentials from the farm shop and well-stocked shop.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No children under 14 permitted in the adults-only camping field. Families are advised to book a pitch in the family field.

Perfect spot next to Rodney's Pillar and great midpoint to North Wales17/10/2020

I liked the fact that Julia has a vision for and is creating a community site on the family farm. The motorhome pitch had a great view point of Rodney's Pillar on the nearby hillside and farm views across the pond to the fields with grazing herd and the river beyond. The shepherd's hut is nestled into the trees and the new lodges are built on staggered levels so that everyone has a view across the pond and fields. The cafe/bar is very well stocked and has great new decor - with an excellent coffee machine and great selection of teas, and a wide collection of gin! Great for the summer, there is a lovely outside garden area with plenty of tables and outside seating, perfect for a sunny morning breakfast and a relaxing evening drink. In the summertime I imagine it will be very popular with the guests and will create a warm community spirit on the site. I also liked the presence of animals on the farm, especially the Highland cattle and the friendly farm cat.

Enjoyed our stay in sycton lodge, 2 very good nights sleep in comfy bed. Facilities in lodge perfect. Julia is lovely, welcoming and helpful. Ideal fishing location on river Severn and well stocked pool. Recently opened potting shed cafe onsite serves a selection of home baked cakes, scones, shepherd's pie, fruit crumble, breakfasts and sandwiches. Local convenience store just 10 minutes drive, lots of places to visit and beautiful breathtaking views. Look forward to returning in 2021.

    Not alot

    Disliked:

    Too much .
BED. Didnt think I would have to check but after painful night needing pain relief for knee, shoulder and back, banged leg on chipboard and with thin matress poor poor quality.
Not sure bedding changed if so wssnt ironed.
    Took own.
Bed settee couldnt sleep on for studded top.
    Broken light in room.
No wifi which didnt bother us.
    TV 5 channels intermittent working.
    2 spoons and 2 forks, 3 bowls and 4 l plates.
Tap just outside but one toilet block bit of a walk up step gravel path, not ideal for slipping.
Toilet wouldnt flush well so always something floating in it.
    Water SCALDING BE CAREFUL.
    Did have heating.
Had to come in one night as even my book pages covered in ash as onsite fire caused so much smoke clothes smelt .
Stayed with accomplished fisherman who said pond had no restocking and what ever fish were in the heron must have had as no evident of anything to catch and river not accessible.
Told owner issues and she just says "oh". No offer to change or help. They do want your money before you can see the accommodation so be aware. Expensive for what you get.
Bad accident on the only road in from Shrewsbury caused 3 hour delay.
Did get to the castle and worth a look lovely grounds.
Wouldnt say child friendly unless supervised at all times.
Shop on site never open, no shops near by that we found.

From the manager...

Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and I don't mind taking criticism where due aslong as its factual. You clearly was not happy so why stop 2 nights and not say anything, even on check out. I am a very approachable person and appreciate if anyone has any issues to address them straightaway whist on site and I will do my upmost to rectify any issues so everyone has a great stay.

You was with us for 2 nights, I seen you on check in and check out so I am not sure who you had reported the issues too.. as I was around all the time and never seen you to speak to.
Not sure you can class a 25cm thick mattress as thin? even from you photos you can clearly see that the mattress is not thin. With regards to your comment all the bedding was clean and ironed, in your photos does the bedding look dirty or creased....
Bed settee, sorry if you found this un-comfy no-one else has raised this previously as an issue.
Broken light - the light isn't actually broken it just needed a new bulb, as you can see from your photo it was unplugged and apologies it should have been removed from the lodge.
No WI-FI - I don't advertise WI-FI as I don't have it down the site.
TV - each lodge has there own ariel, we will investigate this to make sure it hasn't moved in the winds.
Cutlery - not sure why you have said that some was missing. Part of the cleaning regime is to ensure everything is in the lodge and when it was cleaned after you checked out nothing was missing.
Tap - There is 4 taps onsite, the one you are referring too is the furthest away from the lodges, there is one just outside the lodges.
Water Scalding - There is regulations on water temp and the water meets the regulations, there is a sign stating hot water and I suppose if it was cold you would complain about that.
I have no issue with anyone viewing accommodation on arrival prior to paying, you only had to ask.
Onsite cafe/bar/shop was open from 8am-10pm
Local store within walking distance and a butchers, plus 2 other shops 10 mins drive away.

Julia and her team were very approachable and helpful. Small clean and tidy site. The Potting Shed recent addition where you can buy alcoholic drinks, breakfast, lunch, afternoon teas and homemade cakes. Garden area lovely and relaxing. Lots of work underway on Shepherds huts, lodges etc. The site will look very different for the 2021 season with new accommodation and additional toilets and showers planned. Views from the site fabulous.

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots: with Brook House Farm midway between Welshpool and Shropshire’s county town Shrewsbury, it’s a shrewd place to stop to see the Shropshire Hills and Mid Wales on an active family hol.

Shropshire has over 3500 miles’ worth of right of way paths for longer distance hikes and shorter strolls; the 210-mile Severn Way passes along nearby for taking a hike along it on a day trip or stopping off at Brook Farm if you’re attempting it all. The Offa’s Dyke Path can be accessed from here too: the very helpful Brook House Farm owners can arrange a shuttle bus for you to join the trail if you let them know in advance.

For less tired feet, a plethora of outdoor pursuits within easy reach of the farm includes horse riding, mountain biking and golf; paragliding and lessons are available at nearby Rodney’s Pillar and the Long Mynd. Land some slippery characters by casting off on the River Severn: Brook House’s own stretch of river yields barbel into double figures, but there are shoals of other nearby spots to land salmon, trout and grayling. There are some commercial fisheries within 20 minutes’ drive to thrash things out at too, such as Weston Pool near Oswestry.

Once you’ve cleaned off your catch and soothed your sore feet, jump into the car for some historical highlights: the medieval fortress Powis Castle with its famous French and Italian garden; Shrewsbury Castle with the Shropshire Regimental Museum Trust; the Red Castle and Grotto Hill of the 18th-century Hawkstone Historic Park & Follies, and the town of Shrewsbury, with over 600 listed buildings.
