General

  • Dog-friendly site 15 minutes' walk from Portpatrick village centre
  • A 15-minute drive from Stranraer; 25 mins from Cairnryan ferries
  • Close to the start of the Southern Upland Way walking trail

For hols with spectacular scenery, lots to do and accommodation that’s welcoming for the whole family, head along to Sunnymeade Caravan Park, a large dog- and family-friendly Dumfries and Galloway site, 15 minutes’ walk (or five minutes’ drive) from the pretty seaside village of Portpatrick.

This is a quiet site in scenic countryside, a 15-minute walk from the ruins of Dunskey Castle on cliffs overlooking the Irish Sea. On a good day, Ireland can be clearly seen, so make the most of seaside strolls and drink it in. Lengthier wanders are within easy reach too: Portpatrick is the start of the 212-mile Southern Upland Way.

Active types not up for two-legged excursions of that type can opt instead for golf, sea fishing and cycling – all are popular hereabouts, and there’s a golf course within five minutes’ drive (or 20 minutes’ walk) of base. Quieter times can be had with peaceful saunters along the sands of the stunning Killantringan Bay, a beach with its very own waterfalls, overlooked by a lighthouse.

Anyone who’s keeping eyes out for festivals should time stays to coincide with Portpatrick’s folk festival or the RNLI lifeboat week. Those more interested in switching off and having some down time, on the other hand, are well catered for on site, where the facilities – a laundry room, a toilet block with showers, and free wifi – have been kept low key to maintain the peaceful vibe.

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

    Disliked:

In these uncertain times it is extremely concerning to see such a lack of COVID compliance. There was clearly no cleaning been done in the toilet/shower block, and if there was, the cleaners clearly need sacked. Whilst the toilets are a little dated to have toilets with no toilet roll, watered down soap and filthy shower curtains is not acceptable. At every other campsite we visited during the same week the facilities were generally closed at some point during the day for a deep clean with notices everywhere advising you of these times, no signs were present anywhere at this site. Also when leaving the lady in the office wasn’t even sure how much we were due to pay or even seemed interested when my husband made mention of the cleaning issues. This could be a fab site but as it stands just now it is definitely one to avoid.

hi thanks for the review its been up graded the door does fit but the wild caught it and broke the hinge which is being re fitted also the toilets have been recently painted but due to the volume of lovely holiday makers and camping on park as took it toll on the floor paint which will be all re done for next season but other than that we hope you enjoyed your stay x

Cheap walking distance to a very good pub

    Disliked:

No covid complacencies only thing seen was a sign next to a empty sanitiser bottle with no pump on road coming into site. Male WC leave a lot to be desired. I wouldn’t wash my dog in the shower in case it got something. Electrics looked questionable on hook up

From the manager...

hi john maybe if you had highlighted your concerns at point of arrival or stay we could had rectified your worries not telling us we cant help you so by putting them on our review doesn't change anything but i will inform you if your looking for 21st century camping you came to the wrong site as we state clearly our toilets are old but in perfect working order and are cleaned twice a day and have been recently re painted and up grades on the lights and sensors all new what you should have done was booked into a 5* touring park where nothing is old but we hope you find it and thank you for your not so true review .

The campsite was a short walk from the lovely town of Port Patricj

    Disliked:

The campsite communal areas toilets, shower, laundry etc have clearly been neglected and looked as if they had not been cleaned in some time which is worrying in during the present time. Also when paying for our stay the reception was being manned by a very young girl who had no idea how much was due to be paid and kept asking for random amounts of money. I had to insist that she looked up out details and take note that we had actually made payment.

From the manager...

our facilities are cleaned twice a day but were sorry you thought by putting a tasteless comment on that it would make you feel a little better about whatever it was that clearly set you off to decide to tell lies will not be tolerated at this park .there was no young girl on site and i was in reception when you arrived and i set the prices so please in future tell the whole truth as its not nice being nasty were sorry your stay was not up to your standard ..

Local attractions

Energy-filled kids along for the hols? Never fear, there’s lots to do round here: the site’s a 15-minute drive from Agnew Park, an adventure park with boating lake, miniature golf and go-karting, and 50 minutes from Laggan Outdoor where zipwires can be zoomed along, William Tell can be emulated in archery, and Segways can be ridden at speed.

A little further afield, visits to Cream o’ Galloway dairy farm (an hour away) come highly recommended for rides, time spent on the adventure playground, and the ever-enticing reward of a pitstop in the ice cream parlour.

For a touch of nature, opt instead for saunters around the stately gardens of Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and the Logan Botanic Garden, all within 25 minutes, or settle in next to the unusual Port Logan Fish Pond (30 minutes) – well worth a quick internet search – to see if anything bites.

Be sure, also to explore the nearest town, Stranraer, where a museum and castle are waiting to be explored, and a town trail will take visitors around the sights. If that castle isn’t generating the required Scottish vibes, it’s a 45-minute drive to Bladnoch Distillery for tours and tastings of some lowland single malt.
