General

  • Small, 'nearly wild' site just off the Southern Upland Way
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • In a dark sky area; barbecues and campfires permitted

The spirit of wild camping, but in a sheltered spot to make life that little bit comfier… that’s the idea at The Snap Inn Walkers Retreat.

Out in the gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway countryside 15 minutes’ drive from Newton Stewart, this small site is just off the Southern Upland Way (no detours required for a night spent here…) and is thus a particularly good spot for those tackling one of Scotland’s great long-distance walks.

Being a hardy hiker isn’t a prerequisite for a stay here, though. Should time, creaking joints or any other excuse put the 214-mile epic journey out of the question, you’ll still be welcome to settle into the sheltered pitches here, perhaps using it as a base for shorter jaunts into the nearby Galloway Forest Park or nights spent gazing up at the stars at this designated dark sky park.

Pitches here are on the simple side to make the most of the remote setting, but there’s a firepit to warm hands and feet, and guests are welcome to light up barbecues for hot dinners.

    Absolutely everything!
It is hard to know where to begin in regards to what I liked...
The peace and quiet, the starry sky, the remote location, the different places I could go off walking nearby. For me, I liked the very small site; this was very important to me.

I got more than I could have imagined from this trip.

Chris, the campsite owner, was a pleasure to have met, and he went above and beyond to make sure I was happy and had all I needed during my stay. He has made an impact upon me and I am so glad that we met. I have never met anyone quite like Chris - keep up the work Chris...You showed great kindness to me - you make a great difference!

Hi Donna

Although I wasn’t always there, I’m glad I was able make you stay uneventful.

I really is a special place I have and I would welcome you back absolutely anytime.

Your review was very kind and thankyou for you honesty!

The site isn’t for everybody and is indeed ever evolving but it is exactly what is described on the tin.

Take care and I’m very happy you got what you needed from your stay.

God bless you and stay safe.

Hi there

We hope you and Nala are staying safe and enjoying your journey.

Pleasure to meet you both and hope too meet again some day.

Thank you for an honest review.
Sadly WiFi is as good as it gets here! We guess this is why it’s really not a chargeable feature we provide, more an added bonus to allow people to email or message the important ones in their life 😉

We endeavour to make everyone as comfortable as possible. A simple no frills setup if you like and a work in progress.

Take care

Price! Basic place for a stop over, has a loo and shower, what else do you need ?Definitely on the quirky side but very quiet ( I was the only one there) If booking through Pitch Up, don't forget you still need to pay at the site, Pitch Up only take their booking fee, not the fee for The Snap Inn. ( I made that mistake)

Hi Craig

Thankyou for choosing to stay with us. Your business is very much appreciated and your comments are appreciated as they help to evolve in the right way!

As a small site we plan too remain, as it is, quiet, and if indeed looked upon as being quirky then aslong as that’s what people find positive then we are doing things right.

As for the slight hiccup with the payment process, well these things happen but we got there in the end 😉

Kind Regards
Chris and Lizi

This is a gem of a location. Chris and Elizabeth couldn't have been more accommodating. If you're after a remote and relaxing escape or if you're walking the Southern Upland then Snap Inn is a perfect stopover. Dog friendly with deserted roads and tracks that after dark are gateways to the heavens, I now fully appreciate the term "dark sky". A perfect location for exploring Galloway.

4G reception on BT mobile about 50 yards away from the site in any direction.

Local attractions

Getting out into the Galloway Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a must – there are miles of excellent walking and mountain bike trails here, along with lochs to fish in (once you’ve purchased a permit) and hides in which to settle for wildlife spotting. Try to schedule a nighttime outing here too, as it’s a certified Dark Sky Park, with frequent events held to help guests spot stars, meteor showers and occasional glimpses of the Northern Lights.

Other (less active) strolls nearby might take you off to Glenluce Abbey (25 minutes), to the woodland, walled gardens and sea views at Galloway House Gardens (35 minutes) or the ancient Drumtroddan Standing Stones (35 minutes). A meander around Monreith Animal World (40 minutes) is a good plan too, if you like cooing over cute farm animals (who doesn’t?)

Time for a drink after all that? Stop by at the Crafty Distillery in Newton Stewart (15 minutes) for a glimpse into the gin-making process, or head to Bladnoch Distillery (25 minutes) to see traditional Scottish whisky come to life. Both are fine places to pick up a bottle for evening campfire tipples.

Must see

  • Culzean Castle & Country Park (39.6 kilometres)
  • Burns National Heritage Park (46.6 kilometres)
