General

  • Small family-run park two miles from Whithorn and five from beaches
  • Walking, cycling, birdwatching and several golf courses in the area
  • Spacious site with plenty of room for kids to play

Red kites, red deer, sandy beaches and countryside of the unspoiled variety are the flavour of Scottish county Dumfries and Galloway – and it's all very much the same at family- and dog-friendly Castlewigg Caravan Park.

This is a small but spacious site with plenty of playing room for the sprogs, two miles from Whithorn (the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland) and 16 miles from Newton Stewart. It's a popular park with peeps looking for a rural base to take in the outdoor activities of the region, with quite a few first-rate golf courses on offer in the area too. Toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette are all on site.

If you've arrived on foot/by bus or want to leave the car/motorhome behind for a day, a wave-down bus service stops just outside the park for picking up and dropping off.

Site had recently been upgraded and we were on a pitch in the new area which was quite near a busy road but this quietened down at night. Pitch had electric hook up and water. Toilets were a bit dated but immaculate with extra measures in place for Covid cleaning. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Such a well maintained site, it looks like a lot of work has been carried out landscaping it recently. We were parked on a pitch which I assume will become a static caravan pitch in the future as the bases and ehu were brand new. It suited us as we are new to caravanning. Lovely base to explore this part of Scotland. Toilet/showers spotless.

Water tap difficult to access to fill your vehicle situated on main drive. Pitches next to a busy road. No near walking facilities,no shop on site,no resturant either.

The site was immaculate. It is a newly developed site so everything is nice and clean and smart. The site is allowing one tent a night and a few motor homes per night due to covid restrictions. The check in process was quick and easy and the showers were nice and powerful. There is also a washing up room where you can wash up plates and dishes etc and if needed a washing machine and dryer that are token operated (50p per token).

You can park right next to your tent which is handy and you are a short drive away from Whithorn. The site is very quiet and the setting very pleasant.

Overall, the site was very reasonable priced and the facilities were excellent. The showers were lovely and powerful.

    Disliked:

The tent was hard to pitch as it felt like there were bricks under the turf, so it made pitching tricky. I am not sure if this was just the area where we pitched our tent, next to the parking space, or if this is the general condition of the other pitches.

There was no shelter on the field from the elements.

There is only one shower per sex. However as the site is small and due to covid restrictions, this is not an issue at the moment, but it could be once the site is up to full capacity.

The field for tents was shared with a field where dogs were walked. However the dog walkers were all very respectable and took their dogs well away from our tent.

The surroundings were beautiful and the site itself was immaculate. Great value for money and friendly staff

    Disliked:

The toilets and shower were clean but dead daddy long legs and spiders need to be removed by the cleaner - I had to keep moving them myself as my daughter has a severe phobia. If you want a site with a pub and shop very close this not for you but it's beautiful otherwise and its clear to see they have spent a lot of money making the site lovely.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we are sorry you had a problem with daddy longlegs and spiders, these were removed when the facilities were cleaned however during this time of year there are a lot of the insects about. The cleaner would have been happy to remove these if you had bought it to our attention during your stay.

Local attractions

So, so much to do in Dumfries and the area around Castlewigg Caravan Park, from watching red kites feed at the feeding station in Laurieston to hoofing it around the restaurants of Newton Stewart.

Whithorn, a couple of miles away, is a place of pilgrimage for many as it was the location of Scotland's first recorded Christian church, built by St Ninian around 397AD. Visit St Ninian's Priory and its visitor centre in Whithorn, or the St Ninian's Cave and the chapel in Isle of Whithorn, both a few miles from town.

Then to Newton Stewart, named as the gateway to the Galloway Hills, where nature types can wander the Red Deer Range in Galloway Forest Park, adjacent to the Galloway Wild Goat Park. Restaurants and a swimming pool are in town too.

If you're taking the car out, some spectacular drives can be had through the hills along to Loch Ken and into Castle Douglas, stopping off at the Red Kite Feeding Station along the way.
