General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, set around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner

Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires.

The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and an activity centre with Segway rides and zipwiring is within 15 minutes. Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north.

Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a freezer pack service and a dishwashing area.

Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

The inn has a large terrace among yet more spectacular views, and does hot food takeaways alongside its sit-in menu.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Well laid out camping in a good location to explore and enjoy Galloway. Good level pitches. The Lairds Inn is a bonus.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately we were not impressed with the cleanliness and measures to keep it clean in the toilet and shower blocks. More so because of the Covid threats.

Excellent site in a good location. Pleased to find that our pitch had its own water supply, which was an unexpected bonus. Due to the Covid situation some facilities were not available but this did not detract from our enjoyment of our stay. Being late in the season the site was quiet. We used our own caravan facilities so did not use the toilet block at all. Our electricity went off a couple of times but was quickly sorted by the very helpful staff. Would be happy to stay here again.

    Disliked:

Facility for emptying the waste master was not ideal, but manageable. Tried to connect to the wifi but without success. Not a great problem as the phone signal was good enough to use mobile data.

Lots of space, dark skies with fabulous starry nights. The cafe and inn handy for food.

We enjoyed the swimming pool, amusements and playpark.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block! Unisex which causes issues with cleanliness when not cleaned regularly! 6 toilets in total....floors always soaking and dirty. Some people are fithly....untouched toilets, per on seats etc!

Not a single hand sanitizer anywhere in the toilet/Shower blocks..either at the tent area or the nicer block at the static caravans. Only aware of one clean being done over 3 days stay.....

Great park, very clean and orderly. The castle is great and the pub too. There is lots of space for children to run about and it is also dog friendly. The Castle and pub are lovely and it really gave me a fantastic break from living in the city with the virus. I felt completely relaxed. There are loads of interesting things to see near by, such as the Scottish book town, castles, caves and loads of standing stones. We had lots of fun and really enjoyed it. I would recommend it to everyone.
