General

  • Quiet park within walking distance of Gatehouse of Fleet
  • In a wildlife haven and a few miles from the coast
  • Free use of sister park with pool, restaurant, gym and solarium

If you're after a quieter vibe at a family holiday park in Dumfries and Galloway, you'll very much like Anwoth Caravan Park.

It's the sister site of Auchenlarie Holiday Park (also on Pitchup.com), in a peaceful wildlife haven setting near the pretty town of Gatehouse of Fleet and in an area that's inspired Scottish bards and artists for centuries. But – what genius – guests at Anwoth can also use the facilities at Auchenlarie, which is about four miles/seven minutes' drive along the A75 (turn right on leaving Anwoth and look for Auchenlarie signposted on the left) and which has a heated indoor pool, restaurant, takeaway and leisure centre with gym and solarium among loads loads more. Entertainment and leisure passes available for daily, short-break or weekly stays: purchase on arrival at Anwoth.

But back to the peace and quiet… Anwoth is in an area where you can sit still and see a lot of wildlife: herds of deer regularly roam the surrounding landscape, you might see otters if you're very very quiet, and you'll likely spy birds of prey and red squirrels among the many local species. This is also serious angling locale, particularly for salmon and trout fishing in the nearby rivers of the Esk, Annan, Nith, Ken, Dee and Cree.

Anwoth has a launderette, washing facilities and a shower and toilet block on site. Restaurants, cafés, bars, craft shops and a well-stocked convenience store are at Gatehouse of Fleet a short walk away; the town has a local bus service too.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of leisure facilities, round of mini golf, solarium, gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The location is beautiful close to beach and forest, there is a deli/smokehouse a short drive away that literally does best smoked salmon in the world!
The caravan park is quiet, well kept and the couple who run it are lovely!
    Also very cheap!

    Disliked:

We stayed here last year too and had a lovely caravan, we were given a different one this year which had seen better days it was generally kept clean however there were obvious signs of damp and mildew. But for the price you still can't really complain (it's cheaper than most places charge for a tent pitch)

What a lovely site. The owners were so friendly and helpful. Gatehouse of Fleet has so much to offer by way of walks and bike rides and there were so many good days out very nearby. This campsite is small but the sister site is very close enabling us to swim etc everyday.
We had such a good time we stayed an extra night - 7 nights with boys aged 15, 13, 8 and 6 says it all. Thank you.

Great area, Lovely site, Great helpful staff. We only stayed one night, a lovely stress free stopover before sailing back to Northern Ireland the next day. The site was full with many families but was quiet and peaceful. the facilities were clean and in good condition, the chemical disposal point was the cleanest and best setup we've had this holiday.
Keep up the good work Anwoth Thankyou

What a lovely well maintained site. Warm welcome when we arrived. Located right in the middle of the lovely village with pubs serving food, shops & lots of parks for the kids. We arrived at the start of Gala week so lots going on, sadly missed the torch parade. Used the pool & resteraunt at Auchenlarie which was 5 mins away by car which is part of same group but much bigger & noisier, we much preferred the laid back atmosphere of Anwoth. Didn't want to leave after 4 nights so will be booking for a longer stay next year. Washing machine & dryer on site will make this possible although a friendly static owner let me used her washing line for our towels :) Toilet facilities are individual bathrooms which was much easier with 2 young daughters instead of separate toilet / shower cubicles.

Met by friendly staff who gave us keys and info about the park and local area, shops, places to eat etc.
Basic caravan, tidy and reasonably quiet during the day time park.
Ideal location for exploring the surrounding area.
    Very reasonably priced.
    Intermittent wifi connection.

    Disliked:

Caravan needed a good deep clean inside ie the shower cubicle doors and kitchen cupboards.
    No freezer compartment in fridge.
No furniture for outside the caravan.
Sometimes loud noise from children in the tourer area late night.
Number of people walking dogs who did not clean up after thier dog.
Shower went hot and cold not consistently warm.
Couldn't get fire to work in living area.
Tourer area seemed very adhoc just pitched anywhere lots of comings and goings.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for your comments. Sorry if they made your stay not as comfortable as you would have wished.

I'm not sure if you brought these matters to the attention of Keith and Christine - I know they would have ensured everything was put right.

Allocating pitches is something we are looking to address - it can be confusing at times.

We do respond to all comments - they help us to maintain, and where necessary, improve our service to our guests.

Local attractions

We're quite the fans of Dumfries and Galloway at Pitchup.com, for many many reasons including its wildlife and birdwatching, its lush landscape and the evidence of its rich history, archaeology and art in its castles, towers, abbeys, earthworks and standing stones. And did you know that JM Barrie had the idea for Peter Pan while in Dumfries – and that nearby Sanquhar has the oldest post office in Scotland…?

Paul, Neil and Bob (the new generation of Swalwells to own Amwoth Caravan Park) also suggest a look at Whithorn, on the southern tip of the Machars peninsula and the seat of Christianity in Scotland, and at Lochmaben as the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. And if you like reading Rabbie, you might also like to see Dumfries, home and resting place for famed Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Ecclefechan, the birth town of Thomas Carlyle, is also within reach – do be sure to have an Ecclefechan butter tart while you're there.
