Shepherd's Hut Camping: Space for a firepit

General

  • Small site on a quiet family-run farm 10 mins' drive from Malmesbury
  • On the edge of the Cotswolds, 45 minutes' drive from Bristol and Bath
  • Barbecues encouraged; firepits for hire; fresh lamb and beef for sale

Shepherd's Hut Camping is a peaceful rural site on a family-run farm in Wiltshire, 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury and 25 minutes from Chippenham.

This is a splendid place to come for a quiet break close to the Cotswolds – there’s plenty of scope to get out for rural walks or bike rides on the locals lanes, although you may mostly prefer to hang out on site to meet the animals or spend some time by the large fish pond.

The site is in a quiet field adjacent to the farmhouse, with easy access from the road on a dedicated track. A short walk (100 metres or so) across the grass gets you to the shower block, which has two flushing toilets, washing-up facilities, laundry facilities for a small charge, and two hot, curtained showers.

Shepherd's Hut Camping encourages barbecues and has firepits are available to hire to help such things along. As this is a working farm there’s no finer way to sort dinner than to pick up the fresh lamb and beef produced on site – it’s available seasonally to cook or take home with you. Plenty of other farms nearby sell fresh produce such as meat, eggs, milk and other bits – ask the site owners for tips on getting the best local grub.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

There will be music festivals occurring approximately 5 miles from the site on 26 -29 July and 02 - 05 August and whilst they will hopefully not disturb visitors, there is a chance guests might hear some noise depending on the wind direction.

Unfortunately this site is not suitable for customers with reduced mobility.

We stayed 4 nights in the Bell tent and had a lovely time.

Our daughters (2 and 4) loved being on the farm and up close with the animals. Ali and Shaun are very laid back and helpful. Farm produce available onsite - great eggs! Close to Malmesbury which has a nice river walk.

Adequate shared facilities which can be pretty busy when the campsite is full!

It was the best camping trip we've ever had. Alison and Shaun and their children were so friendly and our children loved seeing the animals - stroking the sheep, cows and chickens and feeding the lambs. We hired the bell tent - which was the first time we'd camped without our own tent - and it was so easy and relaxing after a long journey and a long week at work. Felt very decadent sleeping on a double bed whilst the kids were on blow up mattresses. We had the most amazing weather - which always helps - but the fact there are only a handful of tents on site, beautiful fields and trees as far as the eye can see, and really clean facilities just makes it. Every other group who were camping were really friendly and the children made lots of friends over the 4 nights we were there. We cooked over the fire pit and sampled the eggs and the lamb and mint sausages. It was really helpful to have the fridge freezer for use in the toilet/shower block - as long as the wine is cold what else matters? We did a bit of local sightseeing but it was just nice to rest and enjoy the countryside. It did get quite cold in the night - but we were prepared and all four of us ended up in the double bed at one point. Very cosy! Would highly recommend and would definitely visit again.

The shepherds hut was sited away from the main campsite, making it quite private yet still close to toilet/ shower block
The accommodation was clean and had everything we needed, the hosts were very friendly and were always around the farm if you need any help or advice of where to visit/ eat locally.
There was always hot water for a shower
