Highway Hill: The incredible view and sunset from the wood fired hot tub.

General

  • Peaceful wildlife haven on the edge of the North Wessex Downs
  • A 20-minute drive from Avebury; Cotswold Water Park half an hour
  • Smart glamping accommodation on 100 acres of private land

Wake up to wild Wiltshire views at Highway Hill, a peaceful glamping retreat set amid 100 acres of private land in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Deep in rural Wiltshire, this smart site two miles from the village of Hilmarton has a comfortable collection of furnished accommodation units that are tucked away in the countryside yet a quick five-minute drive from the nearest A road.

Set on the edge of the North Wessex Downs – home to ancient forests, market towns and iconic chalk horses – Highway Hill has accommodation that comes equipped with comfortable beds and snuggly bedding. The toilet and shower facilities here are well-equipped, clean and simple, while a few more luxurious touches – like the possibility of hiring the hot tub for a soothing open-air soak – make this place great for romantic couples' getaways or special family celebrations.

Highway Hill gets extra points on the convenience front for its communal safari tent, a large canvas space a short walk from the accommodation units where there's extra room for cooking, chatting and kicking back.

Although calm and secluded, Highway Hill is a family-friendly place – kids can run around and play safely here, leaving you free to sit back and relax with full peace of mind.

Local attractions

Highway Hill is on the doorstep of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, home to one of the largest tracts of chalk downland in southern England. You won't be short of country walks here, whether the goal is to reach the village pub in Hilmarton (two miles away) or you already see yourself bounding over the hills around the Cherhill White Horse (15 minutes' drive).

For further outdoor activities, you're half an hour from Cotswold Water Park, a huge system of lakes where there's scope for waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, paddleboarding or letting off steam on a floating inflatable obstacle course. For indoor exercise, meanwhile, there are well-equipped public leisure centres in Calne (10 minutes) and Chippenham (20 minutes).

Other local attractions of note include architectural highlights like Avebury Manor and Gardens (20 minutes) and the UNESCO-listed centre of Bath (40 minutes). Wiltshire's also a hotspot for prehistoric heritage, including iconic Stonehenge (50 minutes) and the lesser-known standing stones at Avebury (20 minutes). Finally, if you're looking for something for the kids, you could try nearby family-friendly options like the Swindon Steam Museum (25 minutes), Longleat Safari Park (an hour) or Cotswold Wildlife Park (50 minutes).
